Local club brings the World Cup standard to Belgium
Lausanne
Recurve Men: Kurt DE BACKER v Ivan DENIS (Photos @ Kurt LEMMENS)
With finals in the city centre of Antwerp at the historical site of 'Het Steen', a giant screen where the competition was broadcasted in live stream and with live commentary of the matches, the World Cup atmosphere in Antwerp was higher than ever. The crowd enjoyed the beautiful scenery under a dazzling sun, the archers had an experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives and the organisers gave local decision makers and media the best possible impression of archery they could offer.
In the recurve women division Sabrina STRUYF grabbed the gold medal, before Tamara GEERAERTS and Zoë GÖBBELS. Kurt DE BACKER defeated Ivan DENIS, who coordinated the event, in the gold medal match of the recurve men division. Third place was for Robin RAMAEKERS.
Peter VANDEKERKHOF became the new Belgian champion in compound men, beating Reginald KOOLS in the finals. Michael CAUWE won the bronze medal match. In compound women it was Catheline DESSOY who beat Sarah PRIEELS in the gold medal match, while Gladys WILLEMS took the bronze medal.
Ludo VAN CAMPENHOUT, Alderman (Minister) for Sports in Antwerp, was impressed by the competition format: "It was the first time I witnessed archery, and I really enjoyed the sport. The life of a politician is sometimes just too busy but I have the time to try the initiation that was offered". The organisation is proud to announce that a 20-min compilation of the finals will be broadcast on two TV stations, Exqi Sport and Live!tv, for more than 400,000 viewers.
