Athlete of the Week: Mauro NESPOLI (ITA)

London 2012 Olympic team champions FRANGILLI, GALIAZZO, NESPOLI    An international archer since 2007, Mauro NESPOLI was one of three men selected to represent Italy at the 2008 Olympic Games at age 20. The Italian team, entering the Olympic Games as the new European champions and having placed on the World Cup podium at the three World Cup events preceding the Games, had high expectations in Beijing.     Mauro NESPOLI, Marco GALIAZZO and Ilario DI BUO made their way to the gold medal final, where they fought Korea in a dramatic match, losing the title by just 1 point on their last arrow.   Four years later, the Italian men arrived at the London Olympic Games with ambitions once again, having won the bronze medal at the Turin World Championships in 2011 and the silver at the European Championships in May 2012.   The 24-year-old archer NESPOLI, with teammates Marco GALIAZZO and Michele FRANGILLI, had a disappointed ranking round, placing only 6th. However they started the 1/8 elimination round with a victory over Chinese Taipei, followed by victories over China and Mexico.    Receiving the "European Personality Award" in the City Hall of RomeIn the gold medal final against the United States, the Italians found themselves in the same position as in 2008: the gold medal would be decided on their last arrow. Just like in Beijing, the final ended with only 1 point separating the two teams – this time in favour of NESPOLI and his teammates (219-218). It was Italy’s first ever team gold medal in Olympic archery history.    In December 2012, Mauro NESPOLI received the “European Personality Award” for his Olympic achievements, over participants from the world of sport, culture and entertainment. The ceremony was held in the City Hall of Rome on the Capitoline Hill, the citadel of the earliest Romans, by the European Centre for Turism with the support of the City and Province of Rome.   “The emotions of London are still well alive in my memory and it’s nice to receive recognitions for what we have done”, said the Olympic champion. “But we are looking ahead to the future. We want to be present in Rio”.    Biography Extract:   Mauro NESPOLI (ITA) – Born 22 November 1987   1st Team Olympic Games – London 2012 2nd Team European Championships - Amsterdam 2012 1st Mixed Team European Championships - Amsterdam 2012 3rd Team World Archery Championships – Turin 2011 1st Individual European Grand Prix - Boe 2011 1st Team European Grand Prix - Boe 2011 3rd Team World University Championships - Shenzhen 2010 2nd Team Indoor World Championships - Rzeszow 2009 2nd Team Olympic Games - Beijing 2008 1st Team European Championships - Vittel 2008 2nd Team World Cup stage 2 - Porec 2008 3rd Team World Cup stage 1 – Santo Domingo 2008 1st Team World Cup stage 4 – Dover 2007
