Athlete of the week: Andrea GALES (GBR)
Lausanne
Shooting the gold medal match of the Indoor World Cup Final
Archery is one of the rare sport that allows for a long career. Andrea GALES won her first major individual title last weekend at age 40 !
The British archer’s best individual result on the world stage so far was a fourth place at the Edinburgh 2010 World Cup Final. A wild card, Andrea GALES beat the women’s compound world No. 1 Nicky HUNT in quarterfinals in a one-arrow shoot-off after a dramatic match finished 5-5. But GALES lost to world champion Albina LOGINOVA in the semi-finals and Erika JONES (ANSCHUTZ) of the United States in the bronze medal match.
Andrea GALES showed her potential for indoor archery in recent years. In 2012, she won the bronze medal with her team at the Indoor World Championships in Las Vegas, and placed 9th in the Indoor World Cup Final.
Last weekend, after a three-stage race that began in Singapore, traveled to Nimes and culminated in the Las Vegas tournament, Andrea GALES was once again among the archers selected to compete in the Indoor World Cup Final – and she put up strong performances against some of the world’s best indoor archers.
In the 1/8 elimination round, she defeated her compatriot and winner of the Nimes stage Naomi JONES 6-4. In quarterfinals, Andrea GALES faced the defending Indoor World Cup champion Joanna CHESSE. After a tight match that ended in a draw (5-5), the British archer won the shoot-off 9 to 9, her arrow being closer to the centre. She had to shoot yet another tiebreaker in semifinal, this time against the young Inge VAN CASPEL (NED). Both archers shot a 10, but GALES’s was closer and opened her the door to the gold medal final. GALES went head to head with VANDIONANT, and despite strong shooting from VANDIONANT, was able to claim the gold medal, 7-3.
What an exciting first major victory for the British archer!
