Archers from eight countries at World Ranking Event in Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo
Dominican Republic is hosting the Copa Merengue, a World Ranking Event, in Santo Domingo from 16-21 April.
Current recurve world champion, Denisse VAN LAMOEN from Chile ranked first in the qualification round, followed by the 2009 world championships bronze medalist Natalia SANCHEZ from Colombia.
Cuba’s Juan Carlos STEVENS topped the men’s recurve list, while former world cadet world champion Paris GOICO from Dominican Republic dominated the men’s compound category.
Another highlight of the tournament has been the first international participation of archers from the Virgin Island, as they have been represented by Julianne ABERNATHY, a six-time winter Olympian in the sport of luge, who is being coached by Ruth ROWE, an archery legend who won several world championships medals back in the 1970s and 1980s.
