Mediterranean Games were inaugurated in Mersin

Turkey continues to host international sport events. Even though the organisation of the Games was handed over to Mersin only two years after the withdrawal of the Greek city of Volos due to economic problems, everything seems to be ready on the delegations side.
The 24 country members of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games are attending, including The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for its first participation. In total 2,994 athletes are taking part in the competitions of the 27 sports programme.
The archery competitions start on Saturday 22 June with the individual qualification and elimination rounds. The team events will be featured on Sunday 23, and the individual medals will be awarded on Monday 24. As for the Olympic Games, the recurve bow integrates the Mediterranean Games programme.
The University of Mersin receives the 65 archers (41 men and 24 women) coming from 15 countries. Italians are the big favourites with a complete team of great champions: Mauro NESPOLI, Michele FRANGILLI and Alberto ZAGAMI for the men, and Natalia VALEEVA, Claudia MANDIA and Guendalina SARTORI for the women.
In the men’s category, the Spaniards should also be watched with attention: Olympian Elías CUESTA, Juan-Ignacio RODRIGUEZ and Antonio FERNANDEZ were quarter-finalists in the team event at the Antalya World Cup last week. Turks Yagiz YILMAZ and Fatih BOZLAR, executors of the Spaniards and ranked 4th in Antalya, will also have their word to say. The Egyptian team, with Youth Olympic Champion Ibrahim SABRY, who participates in his first international competition since the Singapore YOG and the Doha Pan Arab Games, and Olympian Ahmed EL NEMR will also be very competitive.
In the women’s category, Turk Begül LOKLUOGLU (world N°54) will try to take a medal to the Italian favourites.
