Latin athletes advance in force in compound eliminations

The day started with the first rounds of individual compound eliminations, featuring all athletes except the top 8 from qualifications, who had byes into the 1/16th scheduled for the afternoon.
The men’s 1/48 elimination round featured only one match, in which Rafael PAIZ (GUA) defeated Luis Alberto ARIAS NARANJO (CRC). In the 1/24 round, Martin DAMSBO (DEN) displayed great form, shooting 147 points to qualify. 
Other stars who advanced to the 1/16 round are World Cup Final bronze medallist Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX), 2007 World Cup Final winner Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), 2007 world champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) and European champion Sergio PAGNI (ITA). 
The highest scoring athletes of the 1/24 round were Venezuela’s Leandro ROJAS, who scored 148 points to defeat Colombia’s José Carlos OSPINA, as well as Maico GOMEZ (VEN) and Camilo Andres CARDONA (COL), who tied at 148-148 after fifteen arrows. GOMEZ won the shoot-off with a 9 closer to the centre than that of his opponent. 
Puerto Rico’s Jean PIZARRO (photo) authored the major upset of this round: he started with 40 points to defeat Christophe DOUSSOT (FRA) 144-143. With very good scores overall, the Latin American men are poised to challenge fan favourites in the next rounds.
The women’s eliminations started with the 1/24 round, and the results were unsurprising. Former World Cup stage winners Ashley WALLACE (CAN) and Sandrine VANDIONANT (FRA), 2010 World Cup Final winner Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) as well as 2010 European champion Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS) all qualified without difficulty. Colombia’s Aura Maria BRAVO (main photo) also qualified and will join compatriots Alejandra USQUIANO and Sara LOPEZ in the 1/16 elimination round, which will take place in the afternoon. Competition continues all the way to the individual semi-finals later today.
