Albina LOGINOVA shows her ambitions for a third title

The session embodied the growing battle between the old guard, led by Albina LOGINOVA, and the new wave of compound powerhouses, Colombia and Korea.

LOGINOVA, who claimed individual gold at the recent Wroclaw World Cup, was strongest from the beginning to the end in today’s 72-arrow round shot at 50 metres. She scored 346 points to top the first half, and added another 346 points in the second half, for a 692-point total. Judging by that score, she is shooting at the same level as in 2011 (693 points), when she won the individual gold medal.

The World Championships is the most important event of all for LOGINOVA, who saw the 2013 World Cup events as preparation towards Belek Antalya. If she wins she would become the first archer to win three World Championships in a row. “I know that I can do it,” she warned.

SEOK Ji Hyun, Korea’s best hope for a first-ever individual World Championships medal in the compound division, was 2nd overall with 690 points. She credited her participation in three World Cup stages this season – which included individual and team titles in Shanghai – for helping her gather international experience and compete well today.

The Korean archer finished two points ahead of Sara LOPEZ, historic double gold medallist for Colombia at the Antalya World Cup (688). LOGINOVA’s surprising teammate Svetlana CHERKASHNEVA, 20 years old, followed in 4th (687) ahead of recent World Cup Final winner Alejandra USQUIANO of Colombia.

A shoot-off was used separate three athletes vying to take direct passes to the 1/16 round - after four athletes tied for 6th place at 684 points. Jyothi Surekha VENNAM (IND) won the shoot-off ahead of CHOI Bomin (KOR), and world N°1 Erika JONES (USA), leaving Camilla SOEMOD (DEN) out of the top 8.

A battle between the reigning world-champion team from the United States and new challengers Colombia was expected in the team event, but it was Korea who emerged on top of the ranking. Consistent scores from SEOK Ji Hyun, SEO Jung Hee and CHOI Bomin totalled 2053 and a comfortable lead over Colombians Aura María BRAVO, Sara LOPEZ (photo), and Alejandra USQUIANO (2038). Just one point behind them was Italy (2037), ahead of Russia (2035). The United States, with only one athlete, JONES, from 2011 - and newcomers to the World Championships Carli COCHRAN and Gabrielle CYR - dropped to 7th.

The elimination will be on Wednesday. That is when we will see if the 2013 World Championships will follow patterns from this year's World Cup season, or if new athletes will emerge.
