Erika JONES ninth in race for Athlete of the World Games title
Up against superstars from other sports like Marcel HASSEMEIER (GER), who won four life saving gold medals, taking the title was always going to be a tall order for world-ranked number one compound archer Erika JONES.
She started strong when the poll opened, but could not keep up with some of the other 10 finalists that were selected for the first-ever Athlete of the Year award. Voting was carried out through the International World Games Association website throughout January 2014.
HASSEMEIER, who was the most successful sportsperson at the 2013 event, was the runaway winner with 21,871 votes. In second and third: Mongolian Sumo wrestler Gangkuyag Naranbat (12,744 votes) and Regina Jacques, water skiing athlete from the USA, on 12,570 votes. The Team of the Year award was awarded to the USA squad competing in the flying disc competition.
