Russia snap USA compound women’s run on World Cup team golds in 2014

“It’s always good to win,” said Albina LOGINOVA with a big smile. “The conditions were perfect.”

Since the beginning of the week, athletes have struggled with the changing weather conditions. Now the tournament has moved to the more exposed Antalya beachfront, the breeze has become steadier and more predictable.

Albina confirmed: “It’s been the first time all week that the wind wasn’t so strong!”

Team Russia and the USA compound women were drawing at halfway during their gold medal match on 113 points. Then things unraveled for the States trio.

Two nines and a leaked eight put them on the back foot and Russia capitalised. Anchored by two-time world champion LOGINOVA – shooting last in the order – Russia nailed in three 10s and sat with a three-point advantage heading into the last end.

It was a lead the USA couldn’t claw back.

The loss is the team’s first dropped match of the season and ruins a gold-medal winning streak on the 2014 World Cup circuit. Not quite the birthday present Christie COLIN was hoping for – with the dominant women having such high expectations – but the silver medal will secure their top spot in the world rankings for some time to come.

India beat Mexico to the bronze medal. After a strong start, led by an on-point Linda OCHOA, the Mexican team shot too many arrows into the eight-ring.

“We are feeling good,” said a relieved-looking India. “But it really wasn’t easy!”
