Clarification on qualification tournaments for Rio 2016 Olympic Games
There has recently been some confusion about the Rio 2016 qualification procedure following it being reported that some Continental Games might be quota tournaments for the Olympic Games. This is not the case.
Quota tournaments assign Olympic places to National Olympic Committees based solely on the results of the event.
The following events are the confirmed quota tournaments for the Rio 2016 Olympics:
Qualification event Event name Dates Venue World Championships 2015 World Archery Championships July/August 2015 Copenhagen (DEN) Continental Qualification
Tournaments Asian Archery Championships November 2015 Bangkok (THA) European Archery Championships May 2016 Nottingham (GBR) Africa event TBC TBC TBC Americas event TBC TBC TBC Oceania event TBC TBC TBC Final World Individual
Qualification Tournament Archery World Cup stage TBC June 2016
TBC
Continental Games held in the two-year period prior to the Rio 2016 Games will carry world ranking points that count towards the World Archery Ranking list, which may be used to allocate returned quota places that are not resolved in another way.
Reallocation of quota places using the World Archery Ranking is the last resort procedure for distributing places at the Olympic Games.
While Continental Games are part of this ranking list and are therefore indirectly part of the Olympic Qualification System, they do not award direct quota places to Rio 2016.
