Jawkar, Cho claim breakthrough victories in Shanghai

Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar

Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar announced himself on the world stage with victory in only his second senior international taking gold in the compound men’s individual event at the second stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.

The 19-year-old was one of two first-time winners, with Cho Su A taking compound women’s gold in difficult conditions at the Huangpu Riverside.

Jawkar got the better of experienced Mike Schloesser in the final, 149-148, explaining that it was his ability to forget who he was battling for gold which made the difference.

“I haven’t played a match with so much pressure,” the Indian said. “But I just focused on myself and my shooting process, wasn’t thinking much about my opponent.“

“My teammates were also cheering for me, so I was motivated.”

Jawkar spoke of his pride at taking gold as he now sets his sights on the Asian Games and the World Championships later this year.

The men’s final went down to the wire, with the two archers on 139 heading into the final arrow.

When Schloesser could only manage a nine, it opened the door for Jawkar, who made no mistake to claim a stunning victory.

There was similar drama in the bronze medal match, Yang Jaewon taking it thanks to a perfect shot in the tiebreak to edge out Robin Jaatma.

Cho was more comfortable in taking victory in the compound women’s event, beating Ella Gibson 146-140 before revealing her celebration plans with coach Reo Wilde.

“Before the match, I told my coach – Mr Reo Wilde – that we will buy an ice cream if I win a gold medal,” the 21-year-old Korean said. “So, we will celebrate with an ice cream – my favourite flavour is strawberry.”

Gibson had beaten Avneet Kaur in the semifinals, with the Indian bouncing back to take bronze 147-144 against Ipek Tomruk.

Competition continues with recurve team finals on Sunday in Shanghai.
