Brazil tops medal table at Para Pan American Championships
Brazil dominated at the Lima 2026 Para Pan American Championships on finals day, taking three individual titles and topping the medal table ahead of the USA.
Thiago Pinheiro da Silva took his maiden Para Pan title, improving on the bronze he won at the last edition in 2024. He narrowly beat Colombia‘s Jairo Fabian Burgos Rincon in a shoot-off for the title. Thiago, the world number three, also won the circuit title in Santiago last week.
Daniela Cecilia Campos Marzano dominated the recurve women’s field all week, but had slightly more trouble in the final against Fabiola Dergovics of Brazil, going behind in the first set and battling through to a fifth-set decider. Like da Silva, Marzano also won in Santiago and improved on a bronze medal at this event in 2024.
Brazil’s Jane Karla Gogel successfully defended her 2024 title against top seed Yasneide Peñaranda Acosta of Colombia in compound women, while the USA‘s Kevin Polish added a maiden continental title to his long list of compound trophies. A three-time Paralympian, Polish will be pleased with the win ahead of an attempted Parapan American Games title defence here next year.
In W1, newcomer Spencer Arnold of Canada surprised all with a 6-0 win against world number one and 2024 Paralympic champion Jason Tabansky of the USA in the biggest upset of the competition. There was better news for the USA in the women’s final, with Tracy Otto improving on her silver medal two years ago to take her first Para Pan title.
Brazil’s Gustavo Mendes Araujo took the VI(1) title against Ecuador’s Gabriela Tatiana Pilco Romero – a repeat of the final at the Juegos Para Suramericanos Valledupar 2026.
The event also served as a qualifier for next year‘s Lima 2027 Parapan American Games; full details of quota places will be released in due course.
