Preview: Asian stars keen to shine in continental championships in Dhaka
A galaxy of Asian stars, including World Champions and World Cup winners, will be in action at the 24th Asian Archery Championships, taking place from 9 to 14 November in Bangladesh.
A number of medallists from that previous edition in Bangkok – including reigning champion Andrey Tyutyun of Kazakhstan, currently ranked 32nd in the world – return this year to defend their titles, while others will aim to improve the colour of their medals.
A total of 207 archers from 29 nations will compete for continental glory across 10 events at the National Stadium in Dhaka.
Host nation fields a 16-strong team featuring several of its top names. Abdur Rahman Ali, who became only the second Bangladeshi archer to win an Asia Cup title this summer, leads the home challenge. Olympian Md Sagor Islam is another archer to watch on home soil.
Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist Nam Suhyeon of Korea is the biggest name in the recurve women’s individual competition. Korea has entered a full team of 16 athletes, including Lee Gahyun, who shocked teammate Lim Sihyeon, the reigning Olympic Champion, to win the recurve women’s individual title at the second stage of the 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai.
World number two Jyothi Surekha Vennam of India, the reigning Asian Games Champion, headlines the compound competitions. Vennam has enjoyed a strong season so far, collecting World Cup Final individual bronze and World Championships mixed team silver, and will look to upgrade her individual silver medal from the previous continental championships.
Experienced archer Deepika Kumari will be aiming for her first gold medal of the season after winning bronze in Shanghai.
