Shanghai 2026: Türkiye, USA set for two compound team final clashes
Saturday morning is set to be dominated by Türkiye and USA as both nations’ compound teams will face each other in the men’s and women’s finals at Shanghai 2026 – the second stage of the 2026 Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit.
Türkiye’s Hazal Burun, Defne Cekmak and Emine Rabia Oguz upset world number one Mexico by four points, 232-228, in compound women and will now face USA’s Alexis Ruiz, Olivia Dean and newcomer Kaylee Gurney, who edged Korea 232-231.
Although Türkiye averaged 9.67 points per arrow – an achievement in itself given the swirling wind inside Yuanshen Sports Centre intensified significantly compared to qualification day – USA enters the final as slight favourite after narrowly missing gold in Puebla at the opening stage last month.
For Türkiye, meanwhile, gold on Saturday would mark the nation’s first compound women’s team title since Berlin 2019, with an entirely different trio from the one competing this week in Shanghai.
“Last year, we competed in the bronze medal match here as well, and we took the bronze,” said Oguz, who alongside Burun was also part of Türkiye’s fourth-placed team in Puebla. “This year too, we fought with all our might to secure the six [compound] medals because the only thing we wanted was to achieve exactly that.”
“The challenge here is that the wind on this range is extremely unpredictable. Anything can happen at any moment, and adapting to it can sometimes be very difficult.”
“We experienced this during our individual elimination rounds as well. Today, for instance, the wind was incredibly strong, and it significantly affected our arrows – or rather, it significantly affected our shots.”
With the individual elimination brackets returning to the 1/48 round in 2026, several team athletes also competed during the morning individual session. Oguz, who defeated Adriana Castillo in the 1/24 round, suggested that additional shooting time may even have been beneficial in such difficult conditions.
USA compound men’s archer Gaius Carter was another athlete in action earlier in the day but fell narrowly to veteran Jozef Bosansky, 147-146.
The 26-year-old responded impressively alongside world record holder James Lutz and Louis Price as USA defeated world number one India 235-234 to secure a guaranteed medal in Carter’s maiden World Cup appearance – something he admitted he had targeted ever since narrowly missing selection last year.
“It was a great start and this is also my first time in Asia. This is awesome. It’s exciting to see that USA is in the gold medal team match,” said Carter. “Early last year after Vegas, I set my target to join the US team – but you know in USA, it’s a hard thing, so I worked pretty hard and had the opportunity to be selected for China.”
Meanwhile, China secured compound men’s team bronze after two shoot-offs against India.
Shi Jingyu, Liu Jinyi and Qi Xiangshuo clinched the podium place by edging India with two Xs to one during the decisive shoot-off.
Competition in Shanghai continues this afternoon with recurve qualification.
