ELLISON and LEEK lead on the first day of the Pan American Games

ELLISON and LEEK lead on the first day of the Pan American Games Guadalajara – 17 October 2011 LEEK and ELLISON at Ogden 2011 World Cup    World’s number one Brady ELLISON (USA) and teammate Miranda LEEK (USA) ranked first in the FITA Round long distances of the Pan American Games currently being held in Guadalajara, Mexico.   In total, 64 archers from 14 countries take part in this competition. On the first day (Monday, 17 October), three Pan American Games records were set: women’s 70 metres by LEEK (338), women’s 60 metres by Mexico’s Aida ROMAN (341), and men’s 70 meters by ELLISON (339).   "I'm feeling strong and determined," said LEEK of her first day of competition. "I had a great day, and I'm looking forward to tomorrow." Teammate ELLISON, despite his Pan Am Games record, expressed dissatisfaction with the overall men's scores from the first day, stating: "I felt the whole field should have shot five points better. Hopefully I'll shoot better tomorrow, and break some more records."    After 72 arrows ELLISON (652) edges Cuban veteran Juan Carlos STEVENS (649), and Colombia’s Daniel PINEDA (648). They are closely followed by two Canadians: Jay LYON (646) and Crispin DUENAS (642). The local idol Juan Rene SERRANO placed himself 8th at 638.   On the women’s side, LEEK (675) fought a difficult battle versus two archers from Mexico: Aida ROMAN (671) and 16-year old Alejandra VALENCIA (671). A pleasant surprise came from Venezuela’s Leidys BRITO, fourth with 657, six points more than USA's Khatuna LORIG. The current world champion, Denisse VAN LAMOEN (CHI), showed a shy performance as she was able to rank only in the eighth position (629).   Qualifications will conclude on Tuesday, 18 October with the second half of the 144-arrow, four distance ranking round; both men and women will compete at 50 and 30 metres. The ranking will then render the pairings for both the individual and team elimination matches. The action will heat up on Wednesday and throughout the rest of the week with team and individual elimination round match play.   Sergio FONT World Archery Communication
