Archery as demonstration sport at the Islands Games 2007
Lausanne
The Regional Olympic and Sports Committee (C.R.O.S) is organizing, under the aegis of COJI (Islands Games Organizing Committee), the 11thedition of the Islands Games from 21st to 26th May, 2007. This international competition gathers athletes from 21 islands that are competing in 10 official disciplines during 5 days. These Games are for cadets only (14-16 years old).
Archery will be on the program for the first time this year. Our sport will be a demonstration sport but, as for several multisport Games, if we are three consecutive times on the program, we will then become one of the core sports in the Islands Games. Each participating country can enter this year 2 Recurve Cadet Girls and 2 Recurve Cadet Boys.
After the official presentation of the Islands Games at the Palais des Congrès of Ajaccio, the Eleventh Edition was launched in High Corsica on Friday 15th December, 2006. The members of the local Organizing Committee, led by C.R.O.S President Pierre Santoni explained the main lines of CORSICA 2007. Animated by Jean-Valère Bordenave, Competition Technical Coordinator, the presentation pleased the numerous public, essentially composed of representatives of the insular sports movement and volunteers.
President Santoni had invited the main institutional partners to express their motivations and the extension of their partnership. Doctor Sauveur Gandolfi-Scheit, territorial Sports Councillor renewed the support from the Corsican Territorial Community to this “Festival of the Youth” which, above sport, is “the engagement of a whole Island”.
CORSICA 2007 indeed reveals itself as an amazing accelerator, especially as regards facilities. Thanks to the Islands Games the host cities have undertaken important works in order to welcome the official and demonstration disciplines. Among others, the Rugby Stadium in Lumio, the Stadium and Gymnasium of Vignetta in Ajaccio, the swimming pool of the Carbonite and the Saint-Nicolas Place in Bastia that will be the venue of the Opening Ceremony of these Games on Monday 21st May.
The last work was that of President Santoni, who, confident in the future, has no doubt concerning the support from all major actors of the insular society for the success of these Games. The confessed objective being: “to offer Corsica an open window to the world”.
