Start of the World Cup in Porec: Day - 10

The new Archery World Cup will start in Porec, Croatia on the 9th of May. Already 44 countries have entered archers to this event.

Lausanne - April 28, 2006. The Archery World Cup will be starting in less than two weeks (9-13th of May) in the little mediaeval town of Porec situated in one of the most beautiful part of Croatia. The venue for this first event ever will be the Mediterranean tourist settlements “Zelan laguna”.

The first leg of the FITA Meteksan Archery World Cup 2006 will be held jointly with the European Grand Prix Tournament. Already 394 archers and 119 officials from 44 countries have registered for this event. This is already a record of participation for such an Archery event!

According to the entries Italy, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro, Mexico and Russia have all registered the maximum of 16 archers and will therefore be the largest delegations together with the organizing nation Croatia that was allowed to enter 20 competitors.

The favorite archers in the Recurve Men category will certainly be young Australian David Barnes (2003 Outdoor Worlds bronze medalist), Pieter Custer from the Netherlands (ranked 6th at last year’s Outdoor World Championships), British Laurence Godfrey (4th in Athens) and USA Vic Wunderle (8th in Athens). In the female category, Alison Williamson from Great Britain (three times Olympian and bronze medalist in Athens), Spanish Almudena Gallardo and German Lisa Unruh will try to counter their young Asian opponents. Of course Italy, India, China and Chinese Taipei are always among the expected top archers in recurve bow. The density of the registered archers will ensure an intense competition, despite the absence of the Korean team.

In the compound division, the veterans Clint Freeman (AUS), Morgan Lundin (SWE), Dave Cousins and Reo Wilde (USA) are still competing with a lot of ambitions. On the woman’s side, the Mexican Arminda Bastos, recent winner of the Mexico Grand Prix, will take pride for the South-American continent against the top US archers and Europeans such as the Belgium Gladys Willems and the Danish Camilla Soemod. The latter won the European Indoor Championships last March!

It is worth noting that countries can enter only up to 4 archers per division (Men and Women) and category (Recurve and Compound) to each of the four qualifying events (Porec, Antalya, San Salvador, and China). The exception being that the host nation can enrol 6 archers in each division and category. The top 4 archers in the Archery World Cup Ranking for each of the 4 individual categories will then qualify for the Final in Merida, Mexico on October 22.
