10 May 2006 - The World Cup STARTED !
Lausanne
The World Cup STARTED ! Porec - 10 May, 2006. The weather was better than yesterday's heavy rain but still tough for the archers during the qualification stage of the first ever World Cup event for Archery. The race to the Grand Final in Mexico is opened! During the morning session, the Women's Recurve and the Men's Compound took the field, shooting twice 36 arrows at a 70 meters target. For the individual women, Jialing Quan (CHN) topped the field wih 637 pts. She is 3 points ahead of Berezhna (UKR) and 6 points ahead of her teammate Yu (CHN). She will paired tomorrow against Jialing Quan for the 1st round of single elimination matches. The winner will go on, the loser go home. This is what makes archery exciting.

The Frenchman Dominique Genet closely beat Italian Sergio Pagni for the top seed in the men's compound. They both achieved 688 pts, but Genet reached the 10 one more time (43 instead of 42). England's Chris White had 681 pts. Kalamatianos (GRE) took the best of Contrucci (BRA) during a shoot-out to enter into the single elimination game. They were tied at 645 pts.
The Swiss team created the big surprise placing their 3 men on 4th, 11th and 19th place. They top the team results with 2020 pts, ahead of Italy 2019 pts and USA 2012 pts.
The afternoon session featured the Men's Recurve and Women's Compound.
The Russian Tsyrempilov shlighty edged the pack with 672 pts. Some known-faces followed closely: Ivashko (UKR) 669 pts, Frangili (ITA) 669 pts, Talukdar (IND) 668 pts, Di Buo (ITA) 667 pts, and Petersson (SWE) 666 pts. There was a shoot-out for the cut in which Popov (MDA) beat Schipor (ROM). They both had 630 pts.
The top countries in men's recurve were without surprise Italy ahead of India, China, France and Russia.
The Women's Compound participation had a high quality despite a smaller number of archers. Ochoa (MEX) dominated some of the favourites with 678 pts such as Van Natta (USA), Davis (USA) - both 677 pts - or further in the ranking Soemod (DEN), Fabre (FRA), Goncharova (RUS), Bastos (MEX) or Willems (BEL).
Russia took a psychological advantage among the teams with 2019 pts, ahead of USA -2014 pts- and Italy - 2001 pts.
The conditions in Porec have been quite challenging for the archers which explain the lower than usual scores. It is rare to see so few scores above 600 points in the recurve women and the time did not allow for 700 + scores in the compound men. The wind is blowing left to right over the competition field and is changing a lot which explains the lower scores.
Yesterday, during the official practice day, the teams were not able to get to use to the shooting conditions on the competition field due to heavy rain fall.
