San Salvador welcomes the Archery World Cup

Lausanne - June 15, 2006

With a day of Finals in the football stadium and most of the top archers striving for World Cup points, Archery brings high expectations in San Salvador.

The top archers in the world will meet again on June 20-25 in the sunny San Salvador (ESA) for the Stage 3 of the Meteksan Archery World Cup 2006. This is one of the two last chances for the archers to gather the necessary points and qualify for the World Cup Final.

Let’s have a look at the favourites in the World Cup ranking.

Recurve Men

Talukdar (IND) leads the World Cup ranking with 38 points thanks to his win in Porec and 5th place in Antalya. He has a good lead on second rank Petersson (SWE), 31 pts, and Ivashko (UKR), 26 pts. Then it becomes very tight : Park Kyung Mo (KOR) has 25 pts, Di Buo (ITA) and Yamamoto (JPN) has 21 pts, Hirstov (BUL) 18 pts. In San Salvador, the favourite Italians Frangilli and Galiazzo (15 pts) must take the opportunity to come back in the ranking. Experts also keep an eye on Magana (MEX) and Yong (CHN). At the end of the 4 stages of the series (Porec, Antalya, San Salvador and Shanghai) only the top 4 archers qualify to the Grand Final.

Recurve Women

Qian (CHN) will to go Central America surfing on her success in Antalya last week. She tops the World Cup ranking with 37 points. Galinovskaya (RUS) won in Porec but suffered an early exit in Antalya. She follows with 25 pts. Three archers are tight for 3rd place, namely the Korean Kim Yu Mi and the Italians Frigeri and Lionetti with 21 pts. Teammate Tonetta follows with 20 pts as well as Lee Tuk Young (KOR) with 18 pts. Nasaridze (TUR), 15 pts, will also compete in El Salvador.

Compound Men

It cannot be more tight than the ranking in the Compound Men. With 26 pts, we find Elzinga (NED), Genet (FRA), Hofer (SUI). Following with 25 pts are Dos Santos (BRA) and Reo Wilde (USA). Custer (NED) has 22 pts and Ochoa (MEX) 17 pts, Dambso (DEN) 16 pts, Priels (BEL) 15 pts as well as home crowd favourite Jimenez ! Who will emerge ?

Compound Women

With a win and a second place, Kazantseva-Bogolova (RUS) dominates the ranking at 46 pts. Teammate Goncharova (winner in Antalya) has 25 pts. However, the chase is opened among Hansdah (IND) 22 pts, Van Natta (USA) and Zorman (CRO) 21 pts, Ochoa (MEX) 20 pts, Davis (USA) and Simpson (GBR) 18 pts.

This Stage 3 of the Meteksan Archery World Cup 2006 is the biggest event that El Salvador has ever been able to organize; more than 200 archers will compete. While the qualifications will be held on the green field of the Polideportivo de Merliot, the Finals day will take place in the football stadium Magico Gonzalez. It will follow an Olympic race (running) and promises to be a spectacular day with a lot of fans!
