World Record for the USA in Compound Men

The Americans broke for the first time in the history the 4200 pts barrier for a team in a FITA Round. Dave Cousins achieved 1407 pts, Reo Wilde 1402 pts and brother Logan Wilde had 1393 pts for a marvelous 4202 pts World Record. The previous mark at 4172 was done at the New York World Championships in 2003 by Cousins, Dee Wilde, the two brothers’ father, and Braden Gellenthien.

Dave Cousins:

It feels good ! Another great day of work. The field is great here because it is dog in a mountain. There is hardly any wind and it is pretty consistent. A friend of mine shot a personal best earlier in the season here. When I arrived this week, I thought we had a chance to break some records.

Logan Wilde:

It’s great ! I am the new guy in the team, because I am 6 years younger than my brother. I can’t really describe my feeling and breaking his record with him. It’s a great team. We already broke two world records in match play in Croatia and we hope to do more in the future !

Reo Wilde:

We cheer each other up in between hands, we help each other. In qualifications, it really doesn’t matter who is first or second. In individual match play later on, anything is possible. I shot 1404 at the US national, but 1402 is also pretty good. This team record is a tough one to beat, and having my brother and my father as part of the team make it event better.

Dee Wilde (previous record holder, shooting as alternate in the team and scoring 1387 pts):

Records are made to be broken ! At some point in my life, I think I was holding almost every record at FITA. It’s good to pass them on to my sons. They are great archers, but most importantly they are great persons. I am really proud of them.

Tied World Record for Goncharova

With 1401 points, Sofia Goncharova (RUS) just tied the World Record performance in compound women for a complete FITA Round at the San Salvador World Cup. After Mary Zorn Hamm (USA), she is the second woman to surpass the mythic 1400 mark in compound women out of a maximum of 1440 pts.

Sofia, how does it feel ?

Very nice. It is a bit hard to believe.

What were going through your mind with your last arrows ?

I needed the maximum of 60 points out of my last 6 arrows to tie the World Record. I am glad I did, but my round at 30 meter was really not my best. Too bad this one (showing a 9 close to a 10 on the target) didn’t go “in”.

What was your previous best ?

1387 pts.

You just won in Antalya 10 days ago. Why do you shoot so well now ?

Actually, I changed my left hand (holding) position after Porec. I came back to the position of last year that allowed me to win the World Championships. I put my hand towards the ground a bit more than the most of the archers. At the end of last year, I had some pain in my arm so I tried to shoot in a more regular way at the beginning of the year. Obviously, for me it works best shooting like last year. I have a much better feeling with it.

What does it feel to have reached 1400 pts ?

Right now I feel very nervous, shaky.

What was your previous best personal score ?

1392 pts.

What were you thinking about during your last arrows ?

I don’t think about the points, I think about the movement. But actually I was also thinking about the points… (laugh)

The first arrow you shot at 30m was a 9, did you still think you could reach 1400?

My sight was not correct, that’s why I shot a 9, but it’s true that I did not think I could do it. (Note from author : he shot 35 times 10 after that) !

What does it represent for you ?

To have crossed another barrier, here and beyond !

These (American) guys are amazing. I shot only 1369 pts, but I was really terrible at 50m today. I must have lost at least 10 points there. This is still my best result on a FITA round outside Brazil. My teammate Sidi Neto had 1387 pts, two points shy of a Brazilian record. A lot of things happened since my win in Antalya. I must concentrate a bit more for the matches tomorrow.
