Three Italians will shoot in individual finals
Varese - 3 May 2007
Home crowd favourite Frangilli will shoot in the men’s gold medal match on Saturday, while his young team-mate Nespoli will go for bronze. Valeeva also reached the women’s bronze medal match.
After the compound in the morning, the recurve archers played their eliminations matches in the afternoon. It was a hard way to get to the final matches!
Recurve Men
The 1/32 Elimination matches surprise came from one of the local favourites, Di Buo (ranked 3rd), who lost his first match against his team-mate Lunelli (ranked 62nd) 106-113. Also, the number four seed, Velez Sanchez (MEX), was kicked out by Autem (BEL), ranked 61st, 107-105.
As of the 1/16 Elimination round, the Olympic Champion Galiazzo (ITA) took the exit door, while his surprising opponent Aubert (FRA) advances to the 1/8 Elimination round. Junior World Champion Girouille (FRA) defeated Indoor World Champion Rohrberg (GER) 116-110. Bronze Olympic Medallist, Cuddihy (AUS), lost against young Ellison (USA) 105-114.
In the 1/8 Eliminations, some close matches were shot. Local Nespoli vs. Wunderle (USA) were tied in the first end, but Nespoli made the difference in the second end to clinch the match 106-104. Aubert kept it on in an interesting match against Ellison, who was leading in the first end (54-53), but Aubert took his acts together to come back to the score and finally win the match 107-105. Girouille played against Prilepov (BLR) with ease winning the match 109-105. Local Frangilli also won his match against Godfrey (GBR) 111-105.
In the quarter-finals, Aubert continued to advance in the chart as he easily won against Ukrainian Bekker 106-103. The very interesting match between Girouille and Frangilli was clinched by the Italian 105-108. Nespoli took a large advantage over his Chinese opponent Wu to win the match 113-106. Russian Tsyrempilov shot against Marusov (BLR) with a constant edge to continue to next round with a score of 110-104.
The semi-final matches were Nespoli vs. Tsyrempilov and Aubert vs. Frangilli. The first match was led by the Russian in each end by two points, but Nespoli tried hard to finally come back to the score in the last end and tie the scores (109-109), two shoot-offs were needed but it is finally the Russian who will go for Gold (9-9 /9-8). The second match was led by Frangilli from the beginning to the end to direct him to the Gold medal match against Tsyrempilov at home. Aubert will shoot for Bronze against Nespoli.
Recurve Women
The match of the day on the women’s side was the quarter-final dual with the two Korean archers Kim Yu Mi and Lee Hye Yeon. Shooting together for the last three years, these two archers know each-other well and although Kim has a bit more international experience (silver medallist at the 2006 Antalya World Cup), the match promised to be close. Close it was! The score showed 53-52 after six arrows, 82-81 after nine, but Lee could make this one point deficit during the last end and the match was tied 109-109 pts. They went all the way to the three arrow of the shoot-off (9/10/9) but Lee was closest to the centre! She went on beating Valeeva (ITA) in the semi-final 111-104.
In the lower part of the draw, Marusava (BLR), seeded 19th, had a nice day ! She beat Guo Dan (CHN) 103-95 and then Schuh (FRA) 103-102 in the quarter-final. She scored 103 pts in her semi-final versus Erdyniyeva (RUS) but that wasn’t enough this time. The Russian achieved 108 pts to clinch a berth in the final.
