Test Events of Olympic Games – Quotes of the Day 7 – Recurve Women Finals
Beijing – 25 August 2007
Recurve Women
Press conference highlights
PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR)-Archer:
On the feeling of gaining the gold medal:
“Though it is not the real Olympic Games, I am quite happy to win the gold medal. It is a pity that this test event is not the Beijing Olympic Games, but I felt as nervous as if it were the real one. I hope I can perform as well as I did today, next year in the 29th Olympics and earn the same result.”
On the Korean dominance in the archery arena:
“As a Korean archer, I don’t feel stressed to compete against the archers from other countries. Of course all archers have devoted a lot and worked very hard to gain an Olympic medal, and the Koreans are no exception. It is likely that people don’t fully understand how much we Korean players have devoted to be ranked at the top of the medals board. It is not easy to win at all and the most difficult thing is to win the gold. I will work hard to be the gold medalist by every means. The key to winning is to keep calm and overcome any sense of nervousness.”
On the time limit during the archery competition:
“I think it is OK for me because the faster I perform, the closer I am to the medal.”
MOON Hyung Cheol (KOR)-Coach:
On his impression of the “Good Luck Beijing International Archery Tournament”:
Before I came to Beijing, I surfed on the internet to check the archery venue here in Beijing. After I arrived I found that it is much better than I expected. The first purpose of participating in this test event was that we wanted to test the performance of our archers, and the second was to get familiar with the climate, the field, the facilities and the environment here.
On the preparation after returning home:
“In order to achieve a good result next year in the Beijing Olympic Games, we will adopt some specific and special training, such as to simulate the field with similar wind conditions and heat. I hope our players can gain the same result next year.”
MOSPINEK Justyna (POL)-Archer:
On her performance:
“I am in a good condition. My opponent today is really very strong. I am very happy with the silver.”
On whether she wants to get gold in 2008:
“My coach and teammates are very confident in me and hope that I can win the gold next year. Today is one step to be the best in 2008.”
On whether the competition ran too fast:
“Everything was ok, including the time. But sometimes I wanted to perform better. It‘s really hard for me to decide whether it was too fast now because today was ok.”
CWIENCZEK Malgorzata (POL)-Archer:
On winning bronze:
“I’m happy to win a medal, and I hope I can do the same next year.”
RODIONOV Serhiy (POL)-Coach:
On the venue:
“It’s a good and new venue. Only a little hot for us European people. There was good service, and very friendly volunteers. But the wind is not the same when you shoot right and shoot left. Everything else is OK, and as a coach, I thank you for this venue.”

On competing against two Polish archers in a row:

On next years Olympic Games:
“For now we have only qualified two places in for the Olympic Games for the women, so I hope in the coming European Championships (Vittel, France-May 2008) we can win a qualification for my country and win a medal in the Olympic Games.”

ZHANG Juanjuan (CHN)-Archer
On whether she had thought that the competition would be so fierce:
“I had not anticipated that, but the opponent was ranked ahead of me in the ranking round (KOVAL ranked 5th and ZHANG ranked 13th), and she was quite a capable archer, so I had prepared (for this match) psychologically.”
On whether she was satisfied with her performance in this tournament:
“I am quite satisfied. After all, I am not in the best form now, and I had not fully prepared for this tournament. Sometimes I found it rather exhausting.”
On whether she felt any pressure as the only Chinese female archer to compete in the individual quarterfinals:
“It would be better if I had my teammates with me.”
On shooting an 8 in the tie break:
“I made some errors while aiming at the target. Then I adjusted eight times and finally shot a 10. The coordination of my aiming and the movement afterwards also had some problems.”
On the difference between shooting in this court and in other competitions:
“There are really some differences. Such as environment and the atmosphere (due to the large spectator stands) cannot be felt in other competitions, and the matches were also quite fierce. The archers need more skills to handle the game.”

It is in the past. So actually I was pretty relaxed. I just concentrated on shooting my best shot and let the God decide.”
On her opponent:
“She shot really good and got really high scores. But my scores were really high too.
On what she has learnt from the test events:
“You have to stay strong and fight to the last arrow. As long as the match isn’t over, you have to fight all the way. I have fitted into the weather and venue. It is really good training for next year. I have to keep training and get more confident. I am very confident to qualify for 2008 and there is no way that I won’t be here.”

On the opponent (PARK Sung-Hyun):
“She is a very good shooter and it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to compete with her. It’s unfortunate I met her a little bit early in this tournament, but it happened and there could be no better training program than being able to shoot against the best. The Koreans are very good and I always enjoy shooting with them.”
On preparation for Olympics:
“First I have to make the team, and after that I will start to think about my performance. But it was a great warm-up for it, and I would come with the same attitude that I did in this competition and I just shoot my best.”

Though being at the same level with my opponent, I don’t know what determined my victory. I just did my best to adjust myself constantly and gain a good result.”
On the future objective:
“Sure I will try for an Olympic Games medal next year in Beijing but anything could happen competing against so many excellent archers in the same arena. I believe only good shooting can make a difference. All I want to do is to improve my personal best.”

Comments from Zhang Juanjuan after her victory over Berengere SCHUH in the Women’s Individual Quarterfinals on Saturday.
ZHANG Juan Juan (CHN) -Archer
On the reasons for beating Berengere SCHUH, who ranked much higher than her in the Ranking Round (ZHANG ranked 13th and SCHUH ranked 4th)
“I have some advantages in mindset. I believed that as long as I fully perform myself, there should be no question of winning. I should just persevere to the end.”
On the influence of the unsatisfying result in the team event: (China were knocked out in the first round by Great Britain)
“The schedule of this tournament and the Olympics is rather different from that of other competitions. The team event is held before the individual rounds. If it were held later, the archers would gradually adapt themselves and be in better shape after the eliminations, and the result of the team event would be much better. Such a special schedule has really influenced me.”
On her shape after so many international competitions:
“Honestly, I have attended many competitions this year, and the schedule is rather tight. I have not had systematic training before this tournament, so I am not in the best shape now.”
On the meaning of this tournament for the Olympics next year:
“Every competition will leave me with precious experiences, and I will grow accumulating such experience. I believe that we will do better in next year’s Olympics.”

On PARK Sung-Hyun’s (KOR) amazing performance in this tournament:
“I’m not under much pressure for that because I knew she was an excellent archer. I knew she was terrific enough to score 117. It will be a difficult situation to have a Korean archer as your opponent.”
On spectators:
“I have already got used to disadvantages of playing against a home-playing archer. And I knew that some spectators didn’t expect me to win. I could have won but the first two ends really disappointed me.”

“Oh, impossible, it’s impossible to beat them. I don’t know when (I can beat them), for me, they are the best.”
On how strong the Polish archers are:
“We are pretty strong. The men’s team, they are better than we are.”

CWIENCZEK Malgorzata (POL)-Archer
On the two 7 point arrows:
“I don’t know the reason for the first 7 points at the 5th arrow, but I had a small problem with the last arrow shooting 7 points as well. They were not good shots at all, but on the other hand, I won this match eventually with a good beginning shooting three 10 points. That is a good thing.”
On Korean domination in archery:
“As one of the two archers who beat a Korean female archer until now in this test event, I think it is possible to change the current Korea-dominated situation in archery because nothing is impossible, just like what happened in the World Championships (in Leipzig 2007, Korean archer PARK Sung-Hyun was defeated in the final by Natalia VALEEVA).”
