Di Buo and Van Natta in Finals!
Santo Domingo, 3 April 2007
Here is the LIVE report of Elimination Matches at the Meteksan World Cup 2008 Stage 1 in Santo Domingo. Here is the coverage of the Recurve Men and Compound Women, starting at 3:10 pm local time.
Recurve Men 1st round: Galiazzo (ITA) – Marin Coello (MEX) The Olympic Champion started well his first match with an X10, and followed with 9-9-8-8-7 on the first end to gather 51 pts. His opponent opened the score with 9-9-9-9-8-8 (50 pts). On the second end, Galiazzo was all around the yellow trying to get inside, but he only achieved it once scoring 7-7-9-10-8-8 for a total of 101 pts. The Mexican archer shot more grouped arrows 7-8-8-8-8, but the final one decided the result… a miss! This obviously gave victory to the Olympic Champion with a final score of 101-91.
1st round: Dobrowolski (POL) – Godfrey (GBR) The British archer led the first end by 2 points (49-51). The Polish suddenly got his act together and scored 9-8-9-8-10-10 while Godfrey let it down and could only manage to score 9-9-7-8-7-9, and therefore was taken out of the chart with a final score of 102-100.
2nd round: Kuo (TPE) – Merlos (ESA) Number one seed Kuo proved his strength by easily beating the Salvadorian archer by 109-98.
2nd round: Przepiora (POL) – Lyon (CAN) The Polish archer was behind on the first five arrows with 9-7-9-8-9, while Lyon had 10-10-9-9-8. For some reason, the Canadian shot a miss on his last arrow of the first end, and his opponent continued to shoot a 9. This gave a big advantage to the Pole and the Canadian could not recover. The final score was 108-98.
2nd round: Galiazzo (ITA) – Girouille (FRA) This match was tied in the first end, both scoring 54 pts. No one wanted to let go and they continued to be tied until the 11th arrow out of 12. Galiazzo could not hold it any more and shot an 8, while the French archer shot a 10 and clinched the match by one little point with 106-107. Girouille advances!
2nd round: Valladont (FRA) – Talukdar (IND) These two archers shot about the same sequence of arrows in the first end: 9-X-7-10-10-9 and 10-9-7-X-X-9, tying the score at 55 pts. Valladont, who was ranked 38 in qualifications could not manage to keep in front of the 6th seed and shot 10-8-8-10-10-10, while his opponent kept strong with 10-9-9-10-10-10 to clinch victory by 111-113.
3rd round: Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Nespoli (ITA) THIS was an interesting match! The 2007 World Cup Champion had a hard time with the young Italian raising star. The first end was nearly tied with the Russian leading by a slender point (55-54). The Italian could have clinched the match if it wasn’t for his bad 6 on the second arrow of the second end, where he also scored 9-8-10-X10-8, while Tsyrempilov only scored 9s. The Russian advanced with a final score of 109-107.
3rd round: Velez Sanchez (MEX) – Champia (IND) It was the day of ties in the first end, as this match was also tied with 55 pts. The Indian archer managed to shoot 9-X10-10-9-9-9, while the Mexican could not hold it and he shot an 8 to start followed by 9-X10-10-9-9. Final score: 110-111 for Champia.
3rd round: Girouille (FRA) – Talukdar (IND) Another very interesting match between these two young archers. They were tied in the first end at 56 pts. Everything was played in the second end: Girouille started with a low 7 but continued with 8-9-10-9-9 to gather 108 pts. Talukdar had a better start in the last end with 9-9-9-8-9 but the last arrow couldn’t help him to continue. He shot a final 7 to lose by one point with 107.
Quarter-final: Rai (IND) – Piatek (POL) Piatek started the first end with a two-point advance (26-28). He continued in the same way to keep the same advandage in the second end scoring 56-54. In the third end, Rai shot 10-8-8 while Piatek shot 9-9 and a little 7. This decreased the advantage to one point bringing it to 80-81. Rai suddenly got his act together and scored X10-9-9, while Piatek let it drop to 9-9-8. Rai came then back to the score in the last end and won the match by one point. Final score: 108-107.
Quarter-final: Di Buo (ITA) – Champia (IND) The match started with the experienced Di Buo trailing by one point on 27-28. Champia continued to score a 10 but two 7s followed and opened the gap to 55-52. He tried hard to come back to the score with 8-10-9 and X10-X10-9, but it was not enough for the 9-10-9 and X10-8-8 of the Italian, who clinched the match by one point with 109-108.
Quarter-final: Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Girouille (FRA) The match started with the experienced Tsyrempilov trailing by one point with 27-28. Girouille continued to score a 10 but two 7s followed and opened the gap to 55-52. He tried hard to come back to the score with 8-10-9 and X10-X10-9, but it was not enough for the 9-10-9 and X10-8-8 of the Russian, who clinched the match by one point with 109-108.
Quarter-final: Di Buo (ITA) – Champia (IND) Di Buo started his match behind his opponent from India with 26-27. They continued on the same line to score 54-55 in the second end. The Indian archer came backin the third end shooting 9-9-7 against Di Buo’s 8-9-9, tying the score at 80 pts. They shot exactly the same sequence of arrows in the last end (8-10-9) which obviously tied the score at 107 pts. The shoot off went on to decide the winner and it gave victory to the most experienced archer, who shot a 9 vs. Champia’s 8. Di Buo is in Semi-Finals!
The results of quarter-finals are: Kuo (TPE) vs. Serrano (MEX): 109-104 Rai (IND) vs. Piatek (POL): 108-107 Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Girouille (FRA): 108-107 Di Buo (ITA) vs. Champia (IND): 107 T9 : 107 T8

The third end was decisive on the last arrow, as they were tied on the first two arrows with Tsyrempilov scoring 8 and 9 and Di Buo 9 and 9.
