Ukrainian Surprise! Porec – 16 April 2008
The Archery World Cup Stage 2 continued in the afternoon with the Qualification Rounds for the Recurve Men and Compound Women categories. Viktor Ruban (URK) created an upset taking the 1st place among the men. The winner in Santo Domingo, Jamie Van Natta (USA), still dominated the women’s field.
Recurve Men The Ukrainians and the Indians gave a lot of competition to the Koreans. Ruban finished 1st with an impressive 681 pts. Mangal Singh Champia, from India, continued from his good performances in Santo Domingo and earned 2nd place with 678 pts. The World Cup Winner in 2006, Park Kyung Mo, was the first Korean and also achieved 678 pts. The World Champion Im Dong Hyun ranked 4th with 673 pts. Jayanta Talukdar (IND) and Juan Rene Serrano (MEX) confirmed their good form since the beginning of the season in 5th and 6th places. Two other Koreans followed, Lee Chang Hwan and Kim Jae Hyeong. The promising Romain Girouille (FRA) was 9th and Wang Cheng Pang (TPE) concluded the top 10.

There was a three-way tie for the cut! In the shoot-off, Jacek Proc (POL) shot an X10 and finished 63rd. Rem Shakirov (RUS) earned an 8 to qualify at 64th while Jens Pieper (GER) only managed a 6.

In the team qualifications, Korea finished 1st with 2018 pts. However, the fight was close until the very end with India who earned 2008 pts. Italy followed with 1979, just ahead of China’s 1978. Twenty-eight teams shot this afternoon for the 16 places allowing them to shoot in the 1/8 finals on Friday. The cut was set by Turkey that finished 16th with 1912 points, ahead of the athletes from Great Britain who earned a disappointing 17th place.
Compound Women The dominator of the World Cup Stage 1 in Santo Domingo, Van Natta, was still ahead of every one today, scoring 693 pts for 1st place. The only one who could stay close to her was Amandine Bouillot (FRA) with 689 pts. The 3rd place was earned by the veteran Fatima Agudo (ESP) with 681 pts. Nichola Simpson (GBR) provided another strong performance to tie her master World Record that she achieved in Santo Domingo with 678 pts. Three archers followed with 676 pts: Giorgia Solato (ITA), Aurore Trayan (FRA) and Nicky Hunt (GBR). Sofia Goncharova (RUS) finished 8th. Therefore the fans may see another clash with Van Natta in the quarter-final tomorrow if the Russian beats the local favourite Ivana Buden (CRO) who ranked 9th.

Although they stayed a few points off the World Record, the French ladies copied their male counterparts by taking the 1st place with 2029 pts. Great Britain was not far behind with 2022 pts. Currently at 3rd place, Russia, who won the team event Santo Domingo, Russia will try to come back on top during the matches.

Individual matches begin tomorrow (Thursday). The teams will take the field on Friday.

All the finals will be contested in downtown Porec in the Marina on Saturday where the athletes will shoot over the water!
