World Cup Stage 2 – Quotes of the Day 2
Porec – 17 April 2008
We talked to the archers and VIPs after their matches today.
VIP
Mario Scarzella (ITA) – EMAU President
I had a bet with Natalia (Valeeva) but it was about her dreadlocks she made in Santo Domingo. It was not about another victory. She won her bet, because she kept them until she arrived in Porec. I will have to buy dinner for the whole team… In any case, Natalia shot very well today. She won two matches in shoot-offs so it was difficult to win a third one in the semi-final.
Recurve Men
Romain Girouille (FRA) It’s great but it’s not over yet! It’s always difficult to enter a match, since there are some breaks in between. But at the end everything went on all right and I won the semi-final. On Saturday we’ll see what happen… I will do my best. For the rest of the season we will try to get some Olympic places at the European Championships in Vittel and at the World Cup in Boé. If it works, then we will focus on the Olympics!
Recurve Women
Natalia Valeeva (ITA) I am actually very happy that I tied Yun Ok Hee in the semi-final, because I had a very difficult start shooting only 25 pts in the first end. One of the arrows was just a millimetre outside the 9 ring. At the end, my score was too low to pretend winning. Still I am very happy with the way I shoot in the first two World Cup stages. It’s the best preparation for the Olympic Games. Of course, I will be also glad if I reach the World Cup Final.
Justyna Mospinek (POL) I feel lucky that I won the semi-final because my opponent (Park Sung-Hyun) is still the best archer in the world. Every time I shoot against a Korean I believe I can win, but every time I shoot a bad arrow at the end to lose the match. I guess I improved with this match. There was a lot of wind in the first end but I still shot 28, so I thought it was a good start. Then I shot a perfect 30 and I felt very strong. Then we achieved the same score in the third end. I thought I could win because Park did not seem as consistent as usual and she was staying a very long time on the shooting line. I was nervous but I managed to shoot 8-10-9 in the last end to clinch the match!
Compound Men
Roberval Dos Santos (BRA) I am very happy to reach the final. I felt it would be a great day when I woke up this morning. Of course, I was a bit nervous, especially in my second round match against Brasseur. However, I wasn’t afraid because we shoot against each other a lot. I guess this victory gave me the confidence for the rest of the matches.
Sergio Pagni (ITA) I have played a lot of shoot-off in my career so I didn’t feel too much the pressure in the semi-final. Especially in the third arrow of a shoot-off, every millimetre counts so I just concentrated in shooting my best shot (he did X10). I was down in my quarter-final against Deloche until the last end, but I know that one should never give up in archery. He gave me a chance when he shot an 8, and I took it.
Pierre Julien Deloche (FRA) I felt a bit hungry, a bit tired in the last end of my quarter-final match and I lost my focus. In any case I feel very, very happy, with my first World Cup competition so far. I have a great impression and I know what to work on next.
Compound Women
Jamie Van Natta (USA) – after her upset in the 2nd round Nothing really happened… I just didn’t shoot well. The breeze was a little tricky today but this is no excuse. I had to shoot with my second bow because the other one broke during practice. However, this is not a good excuse either, since it is a perfectly set bow also. Anyway, I’ll see you all in Turkey!
Nichola Simpson (GBR) – qualified for the gold medal match It’s fantastic! I really got focused and hoped for the best and it worked very well today. The wind started blowing up stronger in the last two matches but somehow I got lots of 10s! About the Masters Women World Record that I broke in Santo Domingo, I must say it’s always great to break records! I hoped to beat it one more time here, but yesterday I only tied it up. My main goal is to get to the World Cup Grand Final, of course!
