Some surprises in junior individual matches


In the individual matches, the junior archers shoot 12 arrows at a distance of 70 meters. Only the winner advances. Today they shot matches to the 1/8 eliminations, included.    Recurve Junior Men The no. 1 seed Massimilliano MANDIA (ITA) did not have much trouble to go through. He scored a superb series of 111, 108 and 112 points (out of a maximum of 120) to win his three matches and reach the quarter-final. He will meet the surprising no. 40 seed Markus WACHSMUTH (GER) tomorrow. The 2006 Cadet World Champion Ryan TYACK (AUS) did not survive his 1/16 eliminations against teammate Ricci CHEAH. However the latter then got beaten by another Australian, Taylor WORTH, who will shoot against Rodrigo LASTRA (MEX) in the quarter. The no. 11 seed M. I. ABD RAHIM beat Taras SENYUK (UKR) in the 1/16 eliminations and will meet another Ukrainian Andril BOROVYK in the quarter. At the bottom of the bracket, the two favourites survived and the no. 2 seed Luca MELOTTO (ITA) will meet the no. 7 seed Artem GARKIN (KAZ) tomorrow.   Recurve Junior Women Six of the top eight archers advanced in this category. The no. 1 seed Inna STEPANOVA (RUS) had a good run of matches with 107, 102 and 104 points. In the blockbuster match of tomorrow, she will meet the 2006Cadet World Champion Jane WALLER (AUS). The most impressive run has been that of the no. 4 seed Pranitha VARDHINENI (IND) who scored 111, 108 and 110 points to win her three matches. She will meet Rimil BIRULY (IND). Mikie ZUSHI (JPN) beat Sanzhi OBODOEVA (RUS), seeded no. 6, in the 1/8 eliminations. The Japanese will play against Nina MYLCHENKO (UKR) in the quarter. Finally the no. 2 seed LU Siyi (CHN) will meet her neighbour LE Chieh-Ying (TPE).   Compound Junior Men The heavy favourite Brendan WALLACE (AUS) started with the highest score of the day, 118 points, but was then taken out by K. N. MANGANG (IND) in the 1/8 eliminations, 113-114! The Indian will meet another Australian Guy PHILLIPS in the quarter. The no. 29 qualifier M. J. KROGSHEDE (DEN) beat his teammate and no. 4 seed Andreas DARUM in the 1/16 eliminations, 114-111. KROGSHEDE will shoot against Adam GALLANT (USA) in the quarter-final. The two Italians Luca FANTI and Fabio NAVA, favourites in their part of the brackets were both beaten. As a result, the no. 14 seed Leandro ROJAS (VEN) will meet the local favourite Demir ELMAAGACLI (TUR) tomorrow. In the bottom part of the bracket, the 2006 Cadet World Champion Paris GOICI DE LARA (DOM) beat T. F. SORENSEN (DEN) 114-112 in the 1/16 eliminations but was then taken out by Bas TONNAER (NED), 113-115. The Dutchman will shoot against the no. 2 seed Simon ROUSSEAU (CAN) who was very solid this morning.   Compound Junior Women Six of the top eight seeds also made it to the quarter-finals in this category. The no. 1 Kendal NICELY (USA) was consistent enough this morning with 110 and 112 scores. She will shoot against no. 9 Aleksandra MAKEEVA (RUS). The no. 5 and no. 4 seeds will meet as well (Camille BOUFFARD-DEMERS (CAN) and Malin JOHANSSON (SWE)). Samantha PRUITTE (USA) had to survive a shoot-off in the 1/8 eliminations. Her match against Sarah PRIEELS (BEL) was tied at 109 points. Then both archers had to shot one extra arrow. PRIEELS had 9, while PRUITTE shot a perfect 10 to advance to the quarter-final where she will face no. 22 Vanessa HO (SIN). At the bottom of the bracket, the no. 7 Sabine SAUTER (GER) beat the 2006 Cadet World Champion Anastasia ANASTASIO (ITA) in the 1/8 eliminations, 111-108. The no. 2 seed Lucy O’SULLIVAN (GBR) also survived a tiebreak. Her match against J. N. SANCHEZ (PAN) was tied at 111 but the Brit won the shoot-off 10-8.
