Family Day at the World Cup
Santo Domingo
Ruben OCHOA (MEX)
Individual - Compound Men At the half-way mark, after the two long distances (90 and 70 metres), the 23-year old Dane Martin DAMSBO took provisional 1st place with 695 points, showing his motivation to try and qualify for the World Cup Final at home in Copenhagen in September. Only one point behind him, the two experienced Americans Dave COUSINS and Reo WILDE stood at 2nd and 3rd. WILDE’s brother Logan was 9th and the fourth archer from USA Braden GELLENTHIEN, 6th.
At 4th place, Sergio PAGNI (ITA)—currently the top seeded archer in the World Ranking, winner of last year’s second and third stage in Croatia and Turkey and 2008 World Cup finalist—scored a provisional 689 points. At the same stage, the 23-year old Canadian Kevin TATARYN, who ranked 5th after 72 arrows today, proved his 2nd place at the World Cup Stage 4 in France last year was not a fluke.
The current World Cup title holder and reigning world champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) was waiting in ambush at 12th place with 680 points with the 2007 World Cup winner Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), 13th on 678. The Australian Patrick COGHLAN, 2008 World Cup finalist, only ranked 20th after the long distances. The local hopeful Paris GOICO DE LARA—2006 cadet world champion—had a hard first distance round, ranking only 42nd after 90m, but came back a bit, shooting the 26th highest score at 70m to be 38th at the half-way mark.
DAMSBO let top place go in the second half (short distances). He finished 3rd in the qualifications with a total of 1399 points. The first two places were taken by the two Americans, COUSINS and R. WILDE. Both ended the FITA Round with the same score of 1402, but it was COUSINS 1st thanks to a higher number of 10s (110 vs 109 for WILDE).
The Canadian TATARYN gained one rank to be seeded no. 4. His fellow countryman TRILLUS had a spectacular rise, coming from 12th to 5th place, shooting a perfect 30m round of 360 points. The Dutchman, ELZINGA (6th), and the Swiss HOFER (7th), celebrating his 29th birthday, gained one place each overtaking the American GELLENTHIEN who finally ended 8th. Italy’s PAGNI had a bad drop from 4th to 9th place after shooting the 21st and 25th scores at 50 and 30m respectively.
Very consistent shooting in the last three distances for the Indian SRITHER CHINNA ranked him 10th. The local GOICO DE LARA gained two places to be seeded no. 36, but the best performance by a Dominican competitor was achieved by his teammate BETANCES who took an excellent 25th place.
Jamie VAN NATTA (USA)
Individual - Compound Women At the half of the qualifications, the Lausanne 2008 World Cup winner Jamie VAN NATTA (USA), defending the title she won last year in Santo Domingo, took top place after the women’s first two distances (70 and 60m). Her teammates Brittany LORENTI, Diane WATSON and Erika ANSCHUTZ were 5th, 7th and 11th respectively after 72 arrows.
The 2008 finalists Amandine BOUILLOT (FRA) and Ivana BUDEN (CRO) had different fates in the first half of the FITA Round. While the Frenchwoman only ranked 13th with 674 points, the Croatian took a good 2nd place only two points behind the leader, VAN NATTA. A pleasant surprise came from the Venezuelans who placed two of their contenders in the top 6: Luzmary GUEDEZ 3rd with 682 points and Olga BOSCH 6th with 680.
The double 2007 world champion (indoor and outdoor) Eugenia SALVI from Italy was provisionally seeded no. 8 after the first two distances. The Dane Camilla SOEMOD —who, like her fellow countryman DAMSBO, hopes for a World Cup Final berth at home — was just behind SALVI in 9th place with the same score (679). The four Mexicans were waiting patiently in ambush with four of them, Almendra OCHOA (4th), Ana Del Milagro CRISANTO (10th), Linda OCHOA (16th) and Esther Judith GONZALEZ (17th) in the top part of the provisional ranking.
The American VAN NATTA proved unbeatable in these qualifications, finishing with an 11-point lead over the Croatian, BUDEN (1391 vs 1380). In the second half, the Venezuelans BOSCH and GUEDEZ exchanged places, the first coming up from 6th to 3rd place, while the second went down from 3rd to 6th. BOSCH’s leap forward was due to her shooting the second best score at the 50m distance.
Experience spoke for SALVI from Italy who gained three places to finish no. 5 seed with 1373 points after shooting the third best score at 30m. The Australian ANEAR also had a pleasant rise from 14th to 10th place (1362 points), while France’s BOUILLOT kept the 13th rank with a total score of 1357.
Team - Compound Men Without surprise, the best compound men’s team after the first two distances was the USA with GELLENTHIEN and the WILDE brothers. With 2060 points after 72 arrows, they had a 23-point advantage over their first pursuers PARENTEAU, TATARYN and TRILLUS from Canada.
The 3rd place at the half-way mark was for El Salvador (2017 points) with HERNANDEZ, HERNANDEZ and JIMENEZ. However, the Salvadorians were under threat from the Mexicans JAIME, OCHOA and RAMIREZ, 4th but only five points behind.
No reversal of the situation in the team qualifications’ second half. The USA kept their 1st place with a grand total of 4172 points. Canada remained second (4155), while El Salvador (4118) finally left India and Mexico a long way behind (4092 and 4083, respectively).
Team - Compound Women On the women’s side it was the USA also taking top place. LORENTI, VAN NATTA and WATSON had a 24-point lead over GONZALEZ, OCHOA and OCHOA from Mexico, 2nd. With BOSCH, GUEDEZ and MONTES, the team of Venezuela was 3rd after the first two distances.
In the second half, Mexico (4064 points) lost the 2nd place to Venezuela (4082). The USA took advantage of the short distances to increase their lead (4137). The gap between them and their closest pursuers from Venezuela ended up at 55 points (!) India finished 4th with 4048 points.
Team – Compound Mixed Double In the new mixed team competition, the best country was without surprise the United States with VAN NATTA and COUSINS. With SOEMOD and DAMSBO, Denmark took 2nd place, while Italy was 3rd with SALVI and PAGNI. Mexico, following the example set by the brother and sister team of Dola and Rahul BANERJEE of India yesterday in the recurve event, made it another family event in compound when uncle and niece, Ruben OCHOA and Almendra OCHOA, took the last final place just one point ahead of HANSDAH and SRITHER CHINNA from India (2748 vs 2747 points).
The semi-finals will be shot on Friday afternoon, USA facing Mexico and Denmark shooting against Italy. The winning mixed teams will then battle for the gold medal, while the losers will go on to the bronze medal match. The four qualified nations have the choice to change its two competitors who will compete in the mixed team final matches by Friday.
