Junior Eliminations under way!
Ogden (USA)
Recurve Junior MenThe favourites had a bye in the first round, but there were still many interesting matches. Yesterday Nikhil KANHAI (TRI) told us that he beat most of his personal records during the qualifications thanks to the FITA camp he attended last week. Today he did even better! He trailed Razvan MARCU (ROM) 49-55 after six arrows, but he managed to tie the match at 100-100 at the end. He then won the extra-arrow shoot off 9-8! In another match with shoot-off Lars-Henrik NYSTEEN (NOR) was tied with Miguel Angel PIFARRE (ESP) 101-101. The Norwegian won the shoot off 10-9. In the dual of the no. 64 and 65 seed, Yasuyuki KATO (JPN) beat Piotr NOWAK (POL) 54-49, 104-102. Finally, Anze KUS (SLO) turned around his match against Lih GUAH (SIN). The Slovenian trailed 46-47, but he won 100-96. The junior world champion last year went down in the second round! Luca MELOTTO (ITA) was eliminated by Camilo MAYR (GER) 53-56, 105-111. The junior indoor world champion last March, Ivan DENIS (BEL) did not go through either. He led 52-49 but lost 102-106 at the end against Taylor WORTH (AUS). Klaus VON BEHR (BRA) led Velte RISINGGARD (NOR) 50-49. However, the Norwegian tied it at 104-104 and won the shoot-off 8-7. The match Sagadat NUGMAN (KAZ) – HU Hsiu-Yu (TPE) went all the way. The archers were tied at 107-107. Then they both shot an 8 in the first arrow of the shoot-off. Then both had a 10. Finally both had a 9! However, HU was closer to the centre with his last arrow and won the match. The No. 1 seed JANG Chaehwan prevailed over Rick van den OEVER 56-52, 112-108. The No. 5 seed Atanu DAS beat Mark NESBITT (GBR) 55-52, 112-105. The 2006 cadet world champion, Ryan TYACK (AUS) had some difficulties versus Paul KELCHNER (USA) 50-52, 106-97. MAYR continued his way by beating RISINGGARD 53-51, 104-99. Rodrigo LASTRA (MEX) beat his teammate Jafet FARJAT 53-53, 111-108. In the 1/8 round, MAYR was stopped by the No. 3 seed KIM Woojin (KOR), 99-112. LASTRA was also beaten by Heorhiy IVANYTSKYY (UKR) 51-56, 106-109. Another underdog ended his road. WORTH gave a good fight but was beaten by the No. 2 seed SUNG Wookyeong (KOR), 55-57, 107-109. The No. 13 seed XING Yu (CHN) upset the No. 4 Lorenzo GIORI (ITA), 58-55, 110-103. Finally DAS won the clash over TYACK 53-52, 108-103. Recurve Junior Women There was a SANCHEZ-SANCHEZ dual in the first round of this category: Jacqueline from Panama against Mariana from Mexico. Mariana won 101-75. Carina SAUERWALD (GER) had only a 1-point advantage over Felishea QUATTROCIOCCHE (CAN) after six arrows, 47-46. However the German was strong in the second half and won 98-89. Lenka HARCARIKOVA (SVK) also reached 101 points and defeated Shaquila FAJRI (INA) who had 91. The highest score of the 1/32 elimination round was done by YU Jangmi (KOR). She beat Carina SAUERWALD, 57-50, 111-94. Yelena LI (KAZ) had an interesting match with Kayla DEBORD (USA) and she prevailed 54-52, 105-102. Sumita KUMARI (IND) had a 1-point advantage over Carina CHRISTIANSEN (DEN) after six arrows, 54-53. The Indian pulled away in the second half and won 105-100. Maud CUSTERS (NED) defeated Iryna HUL (BLR), 51-49, 104-101. Cassandra PAJAK (FRA) had a very close match versus Mayuka KITAKAMI (JPN)! The French led 54-53 but the Japanese tied at 104-104. In the first arrow of the shoot-off, they both had a 7. In the second arrow, PAJAK prevailed 10-8. Helena FERNANDEZ (ESP) and Mizuki HAYASHI (JPN) went the distance. They were tied at 99-99. Then they both shot two 9s in the shoot-off. At the last arrow, FERNANDEZ prevailed 10-8. The No. 1 seed HAN Gyeonghee (KOR) beat LIN Chia-En, 110-103, although LIN scored an impressive 58 in the second half! Paula WYCZECHOWSKA (POL) had strong comeback victory against Anneli SOOP (EST). The Polish trailed 46-50 but won 100-97. YU continued on her high form winning 107-93 versus Esther LOPEZ (ESP). Tatiana SEGINA (RUS) beat Maud CUSTERS, 57-50, 105-101. The third Korean also had a high score. LEE Yujin won 112-104 against G. C. MIRIA (ITA). The No. 1 seed HAN continued with difficulty! She was tied with the No. 17 seed LI 52-52 and 106-106. However, the favourite prevailed in the tie-break 10-8. The No. 5 seed ZHU Jiani (CHN) was upset by the No. 21 Zoe GOBBELS (BEL), 56-57, 102-106! The other Chinese LU Siyi beat Gloria FILIPPI (ITA) 52-51, 106-98. The exciting road of FERNANDEZ was stopped by the No. 2 seed LEE 54-56, 108-106.
Compound Junior Men
Levi CYR (USA) was the star of the first round. At least his numerous fans made it feel like it. He prevailed over Alexander GALYANOV (RUS) in a good match: 58-57, 113-109. James HIRTH (AUS) turned around his match against Daniel CASTRO (MEX). The Australian trailed 53-55 but won 108-106. There was an Indian dual in this first round. K. N. MANGANG beat his teammate Sanjay SWANSI 55-52, 109-108. Another Indian had a tough match. Arjun RAO was tied with Corentin MOEMARS (BEL) 110-110. Then they both shoot an 8 in the first arrow of the shoot-off. After that that RAO prevailed with a perfect X10, compared to a 9 from MOEMARS. Finally, there was an Australian dual. Adam ASHLEY led Keiran ENGLISH 56-54. ENGLISH tied it at 109-109, but ASHLEY won the shoot-off 9-8!
The No. 1 seed Ben CLELAND (USA) beat HIRTH, 56-54, 114-110. Yiftach SWERY (NZL) suffered against Michael KUPCHANKO (CAN). The New Zealander trailed 54-55, but won 113-110. The current world champion M. J. KROGSHEDE (DEN) beat RAO, 57-54, 116-109. ASHLEY continued his way by upsetting Matthew RUDGE (GBR) 111-102. There is a bad news for these four winners. They are among the favourites but they are all in the same part of the bracket. They will play against each other in the next rounds. Two other early favourites were playing each other in this round: Luca DI BENEDETTO (ITA) prevailed over Kevin BURRI (SUI), 58-53, 113-108. The other Italians had diverse fortune. Jacopo POLIDORI beat CYR 58-57, 115-112. Luca FANTI was tied with Marc REMIE (NED) 55-55 at the half, but he lost 110-111. Finally Jean PIZARRO (PUR) and Antonio SERRANO (ESP) had a close match: 55-54, 113-113. PIZARRO scored an X10 in the tie-break to beat SERRANO who had an 8.
In the clash of the 1/8 eliminations, CLELAND did not let any chance to SWERY. The American scored two ends of 59 to win the match 118-113. The world champion KROGSHEDE was upset by ASHLEY! The Danish trailed 54-56, managed to come back at 110-110, but was beaten on tie-break 9-10! DI BENEDETTO was also stopped by Cody THOMPSON, 55-58, 110-115. REMIE was beaten by the last Italian POLIDORI, 56-58, 114-115. PIZZARO continued his way over Christopher RONNOW (SWE), 58-58, 114-110.
Compound Junior Women
The 1/16 eliminations were in fact the first round for the compound junior women. Matea KOLAREK (CRO) had a close match against Leila VELEZ (PUR). She trailed 51-52 but won 105-104. Sara FRASSON (ITA) handled Zoe COGGINS (GBR), 54-50, 108-106. Marit OLAISEN (NOR) had a nice comeback victory! She trailed Jhoaneth LEAL (VEN) 51-53 but won 106-104! Finally in a Mexican dual, R. M. RAMOS VILLASENOR beat A. A. DE LA ROSA 55-54, 108-100.
The No. 1 seed Samantha PRUITTE (USA) was taken cold by the No. 17 KOLAREK, 54-57, 109-112! Naomi MARTENS (BEL) beat a second American, Sarah LANCE, 55-53, 109-106! The third American, Kendal NICELY survived VILLASENOR 55-53, 111-109. Two Russian favourites qualified as well. Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA beat Guila CAVALLERI (ITA), 59-52, 115-104. Svetlana CHERKASHNEVA won over FRASSON 56-55, 111-109.
That was all for the junior individual matches for today. Cadets will take the field in the afternoon.
