Para-Athletes all the way through semifinals

Photo © Dean ALBERGA   The morning had a number of surprises, the main one being the success of Pavlo NAZAR of Ukraine in Compound Men Open who took out the new FITA Round world record holder LEE Ouk Soo (KOR) in 1/8 elimination and then beat the Paralympic gold medallist John STUBBS (GBR) in quarterfinal to become an unexpected semifinalist.

The women’s compound division was dominated by a trio of Britons—Danielle BROWN, Philippa BRITTON and Melanie CLARKE—with only the Russian Olga POLEGAEVA also making it through to the semifinals.
The Recurve Men W2 division saw Muhamad Salam SIDIK of Malaysia—who had topped the qualification round—proceed smoothly to the semifinals where he will be pitted against No. 12 qualifier Antonino LISOTTA of Italy. In the other semifinal, the No. 2 seed LEE Hong Gu of Korea faces No. 11 Russell WOLFE of the USA.
In the Compound Men W1 division, 2004 Paralympic champion John CAVANAGH (GBR) came to grief in the quarterfinals against an on form Norbert MURPHY (CAN). The Beijing Paralympic champion David DRAHONINSKY (CZE) fared no better, losing to Fabio AZZOLINI of Italy. Jeff FABRY of USA, however—who headed the qualification round—did not disappoint and will face MURPHY in the semis. AZZOLINI will shoot against the No. 2 seed Peter KINIK of Slovakia.
In the men’s and women’s standing events there were no major upsets with the 1st and 2nd seeds going through, the women’s event being the only one with two Koreans in the semifinal.
The women’s W2 event saw the shock defeat of the No. 1 qualifier KO Hee Sook (KOR) by Lelia MAUFRAS DU CHATELLIER (FRA). The French archer will now face the sole surviving Czech W2 woman Marketa SIDKOVA. In the other semifinal, the No. 1 seed Gizem GIRISMEN of Turkey will face newcomer Saana-Maria SINISALO (FIN).
