No. 1 WILDE went through

Rob POLMAN (NED)
Compound Men Many of the favourites had a bye in the first round (1/64 eliminations). The defending champion from 2007 Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) was on the field and led Glenn LINSJO (SWE) 59-58 after the first end. The Canadian was more consistent than his opponent in the second end (10-10-9-9-10-10) compared to LINSJO’s (10-10-9-9-9-9) and won 117-114. In his match against Moimir ZELINKA (VEN), Fred VAN ZUTPHEN (NED) led 57-55 after the first end and won easily, 116-107. In a 100% Swiss match, Patrizio HOFER defeated Kevin BURRI 56-55, 111-109. Canada’s Kevin TATARYN took the lead over Dmytro SKVORTSOV (UKR), 59-55, and improved to a 10-point margin to win 116-106. Sergio PAGNI (ITA), the winner of 4 World Cup events, shot the highest score of this round for an easy win over YIP Man Chun (HKG), 119-105. Vladas SIGAUSKAS (LTU) trailed Carlos VELEZ (PUR) 55-58 but came back in the following end with a perfect 60 to win 115-113! The third member of the OCHOA family shooting today for Mexico, Ruben, defeated Joao NOBRE (POR) 112-111. Brendan WALLACE (AUS) had a bad start with 9-9-8-9-9-9, while his opponent Rob POLMAN (NED) scored 9-8-9-10-9-10 to take the lead 55-53. WALLACE lost 2 more points in the next end to lose the match 109-113. HAN Seung-Hoon (KOR) and Stefano MAZZI (ITA) contested a very tight match. The Korean had the best start (9-9-10-10-10-9) to score 57. He had a 1-point advantage over his opponent who shot 9-9-9-9-10-10. In the second end, HAN shot 10-9-8-9-9-9 for a total of 54, just 1 point less than the Italian’s total of 55 (10-9-8-10-9-9). The archers tied at 111, but MAZZI was stronger in the shoot-off, scoring a perfect 10 to win over HAN, who managed only 9.   Many surprises came in the 1/ 32 elimination rounds. SCRIBA (GER) started almost perfectly with 10-10-10-10-9-10, while COUSINS (USA) shot 10-9-9-9-10-9. SCRIBA took the lead 59-56. He was almost as consistent in the next end, shooting 10-9-9-10-10-10. It was too much for COUSINS to come back, despite his perfect 60! So SCRIBA defeated the No. 2 seed from qualifications 117-116. Another surprising elimination was that of the 2007 World Cup Final winner. Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) shot 10-9-10-9-10-9 to trail MAZZI (9-10-10-10-9-10) 57-58. The Italian then scored 10-9-10-10-10-10 to maintain his lead over JIMENEZ, who managed “only” 9-10-10-10-9-10. In another match, the Swiss HOFER defeated VAN ZUTPHEN 116-114. In the most exciting match of this round, CARLSSON trailed Roberval DOS SANTOS (BRA) by 1 point (57-58). The Brazilian archer then shot 10-9-9-8-10-10 in the second end, not enough to hold his advantage over CARLSSON, who scored 10-10-10-9-9-9. They tied at 114. In the shoot-off, they tied again at 10-10, then 9-9, and x10-x10! But CARLSSON’s last arrow was approximately 1cm closer to the centre than DOS SANTOS’ and so the Swede won this match! Rob POLMAN (NED) opened with a total of 59, while Marko JARVENPAA scored only 55. POLMAN was almost as strong in the next end with 58, and there was nothing his opponent could do to come back. POLMAN qualified with 117-113. TRILLUS opened with 58 to take a 3-point lead over Ratan Singh KHURAIJAM (IND). The Canadian continued with a 59, the exact same scores he shot in his last match. There was no way his opponent could recover from his previous mistakes. TRILLUS won 117-112 and advanced to the 1/16 elimination rounds. The No. 4 seed Paul TITSCHER (GER) and WANG Chih Hao (TPE) both scored 59 in the first end. TITSCHER, with 59 in the second end, left no room FOR his opponent who manageed only 57 points. TITSCHER won 118-116 to advance to the next round.
Stefano MAZZI (ITA)In the 1/16 elimination rounds, TITSCHER opened with 59 for the third time in a row! TRILLUS started with a weak first end to trail 54-59. In the second end, TRILLUS came back to his standard score of 59, but it was not enough to recover from his earlier 5-point disadvantage. Meanwhile TITSCHER shot 58 to beat the defending World Champion and advance to the next round. An 8 in the first end caused HOFER to trail WILDE 57-58. The American shot the exact same score of 58 in the next end, while HOFER lost more ground. WILDE won 116-112. SCRIBA led 57-56 against José DUO (ESP) but the Spaniard made a come-back in the next end to win 114-113. In another tight match, Peter ELZINGA (NED) had the best start with 10-10-9-9-10-10, while Liam GRINWOOD (GBR) scored 10-9-8-10-10-9. The FITA round world record holder ELZINGA didn’t shoot enough 10s in the second end. His 9-9-9-9-10-10 (total 114) was not good enough to beat GRIMWOOD who shot 10-10-10-10-9-10 to clinch victory with 115. Duncan BUSBY (GBR) opened with a perfect score of 60 against GELLENTHIEN (57). The young and talented American lost more points in the next end and BUSBY won 118-113. In the match between Jean PIZARRO (PUR) and CARLSSON, the former led by 1 point after the first end. However he lost his advantage in the second end due to a couple of 8’s and the match ended in a tie. In the shoot-off, PIZARRO shot first and managed a 10 on the line, putting the pressure on CARLSSON who scored only 9 and was eliminated. In the 1/8 elimination rounds, Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) and PIZARRO put on an interesting show. CLIFTON trailed 54-56, mainly because of an 8 in the first end. But PIZARRO, with 57 points (three 9) in the next end, gave CLIFTON a chance to recover from his previous mistakes. The archer from New Zealand grabbed the opportunity and took a 1-point lead to win 111-110. In his match against Chinna Raju SRITHER (IND), WILDE led only by 1 point after first end. He took a greater advantage in the next half with 59 to clinch the victory 116-113. It was a very tight match between TITSCHER and Danzan KHALUDOROV (RUS). The German opened with 59 – again! –and led by 2 points. The Russian’s total of 59 in the second end allowed him to recover only 1 point. It was not enough: TITSCHER won 117-116. The most exciting match of this round was 100% British. BUSBY took the best start to lead GRIMWOOD 58-57. The scores were the exact opposite in the next end, GRIMWOOD scoring 58 and BUSBY 57 this time to end in a tie, 115-115. Both archers started the shoot-off perfectly and tied at 10-10, and then 9-9. The third arrow would decide who advanced to the quarterfinals. Finally GRIMWOOD was the best, 10-9. Four of the top 8 seeds from qualifications made it to the quarterfinals! The No. 1 seed WILDE was to shoot against the No. 8 FEDOSOV, while the match between the No. 4 TITSCHER and the No. 5 CLIFTON promised to be very close! WILDE raised his level when it counted most and started with a perfect 30. FEDOSOV followed closely with 29. The Russian managed to recover 1 point in the next end to tie at 58-58. WILDE responded with another perfect 30 to take another 2-point advantage, which he kept until the end and so the No. 1 seed defeated the No. 8, 118-116. The match between TITSCHER and CLIFTON was very exciting. Both had a great start, with TITSCHER leading 30-29. TITSCHER then scored a bad 8 with his fourth arrow, which allowed CLIFTON to pass him, 58-57. TITSCHER then tried to recover from his previous mistake, scoring 29 but CLIFTON didn’t want to let anything go and scored a 29 of his own to keep his 1-point advantage, 87-86. In the last three arrows, TITSCHER shot 10-9-10 (the second arrow being just inside the circle of 9), while CLIFTON scored 9-9/10-9. The judges decided it was a 10, resulting in a tie at 115-115. CLIFTON shot first in the shoot-off and it was a 10, putting the pressure on TITSCHER, who only shot a 9. CLIFTON advanced to the semifinals! HERNANDEZ and DUO gave put up another tight match: DUO scored 28-29-29 while HERNANDEZ shot 29-28-29, ending in a tie at 86-86. DUO was perfect in the fourth quarter of the match, scoring 30 to beat HERNANDEZ 116-114. In the last quarterfinal, GRIMWOOD defeated Georg DOLLINGER (AUT) with exactly the same score, 116-114.
Olga BOSCH (VEN) and Vanessa HO (SIN)    Compound Women
Many favourites had a bye in the first round (1/64 eliminations) but it did not go well for Olga BOSCH (VEN) who ranked 5th in the World Cup this year on the field. She shot 9-9-8-8-9-9 and trailed Vanessa HO (SIN), 52-56. The Venezuelan shot better in the second end with 9-10-9-10-9-8 but the Singaporean was consistent with 10-9-X10-X10-8-9 and caused the first upset of the day, 112-107. A. D. CRISANTO (MEX) shot 8-8-9-9-9-8 in the first end, while Susan WILSON (RSA) shot 9-7-7-8-9-10. CRISANTO led 51-50 and then won the match 107-103. Tania FORNI (SUI) trailed June SVENSEN (NOR) 50-52. The Swiss finished with X10-10-9-9-8-8 but that was just not enough to defeat the Norwegian. JENSEN shot X10-9-9-9-9-7 to advance, 105-104. Four matches went to the extra-arrow(s) shoot-off. Maarika JAATMA (FIN) and Linda LAINCHBURY (NZL) were tied at 107-107. Then they both shot 10, finally JAATMA won 10-9. Yumiko HONDA (JPN) and Catheline DESSOY (BEL) tied 108-108. DESSOY then advanced, 10-9. Natalia LONDON (COL) and Mandy McGREGOR (NZL) shot 110-110. This time, the New Zealander won, 10-8. Dorith LANDESFEIND (GER) and Manjudha SOY (IND) tied 103-103. Then the German won 10-9.

In the 1/32 eliminations, the world champion Eugenia SALVI (ITA) prevailed over Martha FLORES (VEN). The Italian seemed set for a good day scoring 8-10-10-9-10 and 10-10-10-9-10-8 to clinch the match 114-107. In the meantime, the best Korean in qualifications, SEOK Ji-Hyun shot even better with 10-10-9-8-9-10 and 10-9-10-10-10-9 to beat Lilies HELIARTI (INA), 57-55, 115-111. Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA) proved to be too much for SVENSEN. The American shot 9-X10-9-9-9-X10 and 9-X10-10-10-8-9 for 113 points. The Norwegian shot 10-8-9-9-9-9 and 9-9-9-9-9-9 for 108. Other favourites such as Linda OCHOA (MEX), Nichola SIMPSON (GBR), Irina MARKOVIC (NED) and Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) advanced easily. The one to go down was World Cup finalist Nicky HUNT (GBR)! She tied with Zandra REPPE (SWE) 111-111. Then they shot 9 and 8 in the shoot-off. The very last arrow had to decide the winner: 10-9 for REPPE!

Many surprises came in the 1/16 finals, most notably the elimination of the leader from qualifications. The no. 1 seed Linda OCHOA (MEX) trailed Dellie THREESYADINDA (IND) 56-58 before losing the match by just 1 point, 111-112. There were two matches between a Korean archer and an Italian. SEO Jung-Hee took a 2-point advantage over Anastasia ANASTASIO (ITA) to lead 59-57 and went on to win 117-115. SEOK upset the defending World Champion SALVI 116-113. MARKOVIC and LOGINOVA fought in the most exciting match of this round: they tied at 56-56 and again at 113-113. In the shoot-off, they shot at exactly the same time and both shot a 10! MARKOVIC then shot first and had a 9, LOGINOVA shot on the line and was awarded a 10 for the win! SIMPSON had a bad start with only 55 to trail ANSCHUTZ 55-57. ANSCHUTZ did not shoot so well in the next end but kept the smallest advantage over her opponent to win 113-112. The third Korean KWON easily defeated Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) 115-110.
Camilla SOEMOD (DEN)In the 1/8 eliminations, Italy took its revenge over Korea when LONGO eliminated SEO 110-109. LOGINOVA and ANSCHUTZ fought in a top-level match. The Russian started with a perfect 60 while the American managed a good 58. ANSCHUTZ then scored a perfect 60 of her own (with five X10!) for a total of 118 but LOGINOVA didn’t want to let the victory go and scored 59 for the win, 119-118. The second OCHOA sister lost to LEBECQUE 109-112. In her match against Ashley WALLACE (CAN), the Korean KWON took the best start, leading 56-55. However she started the second end with only an 8, then a 9. The Canadian shot 9-x10, enough to take a 1-point lead which she kept until the end. She won 110-109. The third Korean SEOK shot against Jorina COETZEE (RSA). She trailed 54-57 after the first end and was unable to compensate for her bad start. She lost 107-108, meaning the three Koreans were all defeated by just 1 point in this round!

In the quarterfinals, COETZEE, who was in the youth world championships in July, continued to surprise the field. She trailed in the first end 26-27 but then scored two solid ends of 9-10-9 and 10-10-8 to take the lead 82-81 over LEBECQUE. Both archers had trouble with their nerves in the last end scoring 7-9-9. COETZEE won 107-106. CRISANTO advanced all the way to the quarterfinals but LONGO was in better shape at this stage. The Italian shot really well with 10-9-10 and 9-10-10 to take the lead 58-54. The Mexican closed the gap a bit in the third end with 9-9-10 while the Italian shot 8-9-9. LONGO still led 84-82 and finished with a perfect 10-10-10 to win 114-108. LOGINOVA and WALLACE were tied after three arrows, 28-28. Then the Russian turned on the heat: 10-X10-10, 10-X10-9 and X10-9-9. Victory 115-112. In the last quarterfinal, SOEMOD had a bad start with a 7! She followed with X10-10 but trailed Melanie MIKALA (GER) 27-28. The German continued well with 10-X10-9 and 10-X10-9 to lead 86-82. However, the nerves got to her in the last end. She shot 8-7-9 and opened the door for SOEMOD. The Dane tied the match 110-110 thanks to X10-9-9. In the shoot-off SOEMOD went through 9-8.
