Three Koreans and the Olympic champion

Hiroshi YAMAMOTO (JPN) and Marco GALIAZZO (ITA)
Recurve Men Many of the favourites had a bye in the first round (1/64 eliminations). In the match between Victor WUNDERLE (USA) and Goktug ERGIN (TUR), the American was unfortunate to score a 2 in his first end. His other shots of 9-9-9-10-10 were not enough to compensate for the previous mistake and WUNDERLE trailed 48-54. In the next end, ERGIN shot 10-9-8-9-6-8, while WUNDERLE shot 9-9-10-8-9-8 to lose the game 100-104. Klaus VAN BEHR (BRA) was completely out of his depth against Daniel MORILLO (ESP). The Brazilian had a 6-point disadvantage after the first half that increased to 10 points in the end. MORILLO won 107-97. Sky KIM (AUS) shot very well with 55 in his first end against Robinson ALVAREZ (COL). At 50, the Colombian had a 5-point disadvantage. There was nothing he could do to come back, with KIM managing another strong performance in the second end (56). The Australian took an easy win 111-102.

The 1/32 elimination round featured an interesting rematch of the 2004 Olympic Games Final with the Olympic Champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) shooting against the silver medallist Hiroshi YAMAMOTO from Japan. This proved to be a very tight match, with the archers tying at 56-56. In the second end, GALIAZZO took a 1-point advantage over YAMAMOTO with the first arrow (9 to 8). However, the second arrow allowed YAMAMOTO to tie again (10 to beat GALIAZZO’s 9). Marco then raised his level (10-10-9) and had an advantage of 3 points before the last arrow. Hiroshi shot first and managed a 9 for his last arrow, meaning the Italian needed at least 7 to win. And a 7 he shot, just 1cm in, to clinch the victory – again! The 2008 Olympic Champion Viktor RUBAN (UKR) also qualified, barely defeating Damian GOLY from Poland 109-108. In his match against Manoochehri Moghadam NADER (IRI), Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) opened with 56, while the Iranian was not consistent, shooting a lot of arrows outside the yellow circle. NADER trailed by 6 points (50-56). He shot better in the next end but GIROUILLE kept his advantage and won by 6 points, 112-106.

In the 1/16 elimination round GALIAZZO came up against the No. 3 seed GIROUILLE in a very close match. They both started well (9-10-9-10-9-8 for GIROUILLE, 9-9-9-9-9-10 for GALIAZZO) and tied at 55-55. GIROUILLE then gained a 1-point advantage which he lost 2 arrows later (10-9-8 to 9-9-9). The archers were tied with only 3 arrows to go. GIROUILLE shot a 10 and Marco a disappointing 8. The Italian then scored a 9 and another 8 while GIROUILLE waited. The Frenchman must have felt more confident that he could win. He shot X10 and then a 10 to advance to the 1/8 final! Laurence GODFREY (GBR) led Oibek SAIDIYEV (KAZ) by 2 points after the first end. In the second half, the Briton had 2 bad shots at 8 and 7, while SAADI shot 58 out of a possible 60 to come back and win the match by 4 points, 108-104! RUBAN started with 57, taking a 2-point lead over XUE Hai-Feng (CHN). He managed to hold it throughout the match, which he won 112-109. The new FITA Round world record holder OH Jin-Hyek (KOR) started with 8-10-10-9-9-9, while his opponent Rahul BANERJEE (IND) scored 9-10-9-9-8-9. That meant a one point advantage for the Korean (55-54). The Indian increased to 55 in the next end, but it was not enough to pass OH, who was steadier with 10-9-9-10-10-9 (total 57). The No. 1 seed qualified for the next round, 112-109. KIM started his match with a 3 and it was the end for him. His opponent IM Dong-Hyun from Korea won 112-100. Brady ELLISON (USA) led CHEN Wenyuan (CHN) 56-54 but the Chinese, winner of the Shanghai World Cup event, came back in the second end with 57 to win 111-109. The tightest match of this round was contested by KUO Cheng Wei (TPE) and Dmytro HRACHOV (UKR). The former led 58-57. HRACHOV then scored an almost perfect 59 to make up for his disadvantage and tie at 114-114. The Ukrainian won the shoot-off and advanced to the next round! Juan René SERRANO (MEX) had the best score of the first end with 58 to take a 13-point lead over Pal CSOREGH (HUN), 58-45. He went on to win the match 116-98, the best score and highest winning margin at this stage (18 points)!
OH Jin Hyek (KOR)In the 1/8 elimination round, GIROUILLE took an early lead over SAIDIYEV, mainly because of a 7 by the Kazakh. GIROUILLE won quite easily, 112-109. Another easy victory was that of RUBAN against Elias CUESTA (ESP). The Olympic champion took a 4-point advantage in the first half (58-54). He was able to increase his lead to clinch the victory 111-106. Mangal Singh CHAMPIA (IND) and XING Yu (CHN) fought a tight match. They were separated by only 1 point after the first six arrows (the Indian led 54-53). In the end, CHAMPIA won by 2 points, 111-109. Alan WILLS (GBR) had a bad first end with a 2 and a 6, allowing CHEN to lead 52-42, for an easy win 103-97. A tighter match was that of Hideki KIKUCHI (JPN) against the Korean IM. Both athletes tied at 56, but the Japanese could not maintain the same level in the second end while IM did, winning 112-110. Finally, the No. 2 seed LEE Chang-Hwan (KOR) shot a superb first end to lead SERRANO 59-55. LEE then scored another 59 (including a 9*!). It was an unbelievable performance for LEE who won the match 118-114!

Five of the best eight archers from qualifications competed in the quarterfinals. RUBAN and GIROUILLE put on an exciting, very close match. RUBAN started with a perfect score of 30 to take a 3-point lead over GIROUILLE (30-27). In the second end, it was GIROUILLE’s turn to score a perfect 30 to reduce his disadvantage to only 1 point (RUBAN led 58-57). In the third end, the scores were 9-9-10 for GIROUILLE and 9-8-10 for RUBAN, which meant the Frenchman had come back to tie at 85-85 before the three final arrows. GIROUILLE started with an 8, to which RUBAN answered with a 10, taking a 2 point lead. The Ukrainian followed with 9-10, while GIROUILLE scored 10-8 so RUBAN qualified for the semifinal, 114-111! In another fantastic match, LEE opened with X10-10-X10 in his first three arrows! CHAMPIA answered with 10-10 and an unlucky 7. In the second end, both archers shot 27, LEE maintaining his 3-point advantage. In the third end, CHAMPIA shot his own perfect 30, reducing his disadvantage to only 1 point: LEE led 85-84. For the first arrow of the last end, LEE shot 9 and CHAMPIA 10, meaning they were tied. LEE then scored two 10s, putting too much pressure on his opponent who managed only 9-8. LEE clinched the victory 114-111! In the other matches, CHEN had a bad start to trail OH 49-54. He could not recover from his mistakes and lost 100-109. HRACHOV lost too many points against IM, trailing 54-57 and 80-84. IM claimed the victory 112-109! This means the Olympic Champion and the three Koreans will compete in the semifinals!  Recurve Women The bow of Pia CARMEN LIONETTI (ITA) did not arrive on time for the qualifications and that did not help her performance. She ranked at the 65th place. Today for the matches, she had her bow but a tough a bracket of matches. She started versus I. Y. ROCHMAWATI (INA). LIONETTI had a solid match with 9-10-9-8-10-9 and 8-9-9-10-10-9. She therefore led 55-53 after six arrows and won it 110-106. Two matches were tied after regulation and had to go to shoot-off. Malgorzata CWIENCZEK (POL) and Itzel ORTA (MEX) tied at 101. Then they both shot an 8, and both a 10! They had to go to the last arrow “closest to centre”. They both shot an 8 again! but CWIENCZEK was the closest. In the other match, Elena MOUSIKOU (CYP) and Charlotte BURGESS (GBR) were tied at 104. Then BURGESS prevailed 10-9. At the bottom of the draw, Elena TONETTA (ITA) had an easy win over Arezoo HEYDARI (IRI), 51-44, 103-96. Alana MacDOUGALL also prevailed over the young 2008 Olympian Mariana AVITIA (MEX), 51-48, 100-92.

The 1/32 elimination round was tense. WU Hui Ju (TPE) had the best start against Katsiaryna TIMOFEYEVA (BLR). WU had 9-9-9-X10-X10-8 while TIMOFEYEVA shot X10-9-9-10-6-8 to trail 52-55. However, the Belarusian finished with 8-8-9 and a great 10-X10-10 to tie the game at 105 a piece! In the shoot-off, TIMOFEYEVA earned another 10 to advance (WU shot 8)! TONETTA started her match in poor fashion with X10-4-8-10-9-10, while Celine SCHOBINGER (SUI) had 8-10-9-7-9-9 to lead 52-51. The Swiss archer could not quite hold it to the end. She shot X10-10-8-9-8-8, while the Italian shot 9-9-10-9-7-10 to just tie it at 105. In the shoot-off, TONETTA shot first and put pressure with a perfect 10. SCHOBINGER could not match it (6). MacDOUGALL gave the No. 2 seed YUN Ok-Hee (KOR) a hard time. After nine arrows, the Canadian led by one! She had 8-9-10-9-8-9-10-9-8 for 82 points, while the Korean had 8-X10-9-9-9-9-10-8-7 for 81. Then both archers shot an X10. Unfortunately for her MacDOUGALL finished with 6-8, while YUN shot 9-9 to clinch the match 107-104. Another Korean, the no. 1 seed KWAK Ye-Ji stopped LIONETTI. The Italian did not start well with 9-8-9-8-9-8 and trailed 51-54. She did better in the second end with 9-10-9-10-9-9 (56) to reach 107 points. However, KWAK did not give her a chance with 10-10-10-10-10-8 and earned 112 points! Finally, Khatuna LORIG (USA) beat Dola BANERJEE (IND), 54-42, 105-99.

YUN found her rhythm in the 1/16 eliminations. She scored 9-9-9-9-9-10 and 9-10-X10-X10-9-9 to defeat TONETTA 112-104. The third Korean and no. 3 seed JOO Hyun-Jung (KOR) also had a high score. She shot 9-10-X10-9-8-10 and 9-9-8-9-8-10 and beat Anastassiya BANNOVA (KAZ), 109-101. JOO will come up against the world champion Natalia VALEEVA (ITA) in the next round. The Italian started well with X10-10-9-9-9-9 to lead Tatiana SEGINA (RUS) 54-49 and later clinched the match 110-104. KWAK had a good test against another Russian, Natalya ERDYNIYEVA. The score was tight after six arrows. The Korean had 10-7-10-9-9-9, while the Russian had 9-9-9-9-8-9 and only trailed by one point, 53-54. Then KWAK turned it up with 10-10-9-10-9-9 to clinch it 111-104. Two experienced archers faced each other in this round, LORIG and Yulia LOBZHENIDZE (UKR). The Ukrainian earned an early lead 51-50 in the first end, shooting 9-8-8-7-10-9, while the American shot 9-7-9-8-8-9. LORIG got into more trouble following with 9-7-7 and although she finished with 10-9-10, she could not catch LOBZHENIDZE. The Ukrainian shot 9-9-9-8-8-9 to hold her 1-point advantage, 103-102. Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) and the indoor world champion Karina WINTER (GER) finished tied at 104. SANCHEZ won the shoot-off, 10-9. Finally, C. R. CHRISTIANSEN (DEN) defeated the no. 11 seed Berengere SCHUH (FRA), 108-106.
   Berengere SCHUH (FRA)
KWAK encountered some trouble in her match with ZHU Jian (CHN). She started with 8-9-8-9-7-9 for 50 points. Luckily the Chinese did no better with 9-8-8-6-9-10, 50 points. ZHU concluded with 10-9-9-8-8-8 (52) for 102. KWAK barely did any better, 8-9-10-9-9-8 (53) and won it 103-102. YUN was also challenged by TIMOFEYEVA. The Korean managed a pair of 10s to take a 2-point advantage in the first end (X10-9-8-9-10-9 vs. 9-9-9-8-9-9). TIMOFEYEVA finished with a good X10-X10-8-7-9-10 but YUN just matched it with 10-10-8-10-9-7 (she had some clock troubles). YUN advanced on the score of 109-107. Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) had an impressive match against OUYANG Ruyu (CHN). The Colombian scored X10-8-X10-10-9-8 and X10-X10-X10-10-9-9 to win 113-106. Mikie KANIE (JPN) was equally impressive over LOBZHENIDZE. The Japanese scored X10-9-9-10-9-9 and 9-10-10-10-8-9 to clinch it 112-103. Finally the clash of the titans between JOO and VALEEVA easily turned to the advantage of the Korean. The world champion Italian started only with 9-8-8-9-9-10 (53). At the opposite end JOO did not miss the gold during the match with 9-10-10-X10-9-9 and 10-10-9-10-10-10 for a 116-109 victory!

The quarterfinals meant more trouble for the Koreans! YUN started with 9X10-9 to take a 1-point lead over SANCHEZ, 27-26. However the Colombian then shot 9-9-9 to tie at 53-53 (YUN had 8-9-9 with an arrow just outside the 10). SANCHEZ kept putting pressure with 10-X10-8 versus X10-9-8 for YUN. SANCHEZ led 81-80 and finished with 8-9-9 to get to 107 points. YUN had the problem shooting her arrows late in the clock all morning. In the last end, she started to shoot with only 35 seconds left (SANCHEZ was already done)! YUN shot an 8, then 9, then needed a 10 tie the game. With all the cameras of the Korean media on her, YUN shot just out of the 10-ring! Elimination for the Beijing Olympic Games bronze medallist, 106-107! JOO also suffered against C. R. CHIRSTIANSEN (DEN). The Dane started with a perfect 30 and then led 56-55. Unfortunately for her, she could not hold it together until the end. CHRISTIANSEN finished with 7-8-9 and X10-9-6 for 105 points. On the opposite end JOO turned it up with 8-9-10 and 9-X10-10 for 111 points. KWAK was solid against KANIE. The Korean shot 10-10-9, 8-10-7, 10-9-10 and 8-8-9 to clinch the match 108-104. The last quarterfinal was a close fight of surprising underdogs. Karina LIPIARSKA (POL) defeated Elena KUZNETSOVA (BLR), 109-107.
The individual semifinals and finals will be played on Wednesday September 9.
