World Archery Championships – Quotes of the Team Finals
Ulsan (KOR)
Recurve MenOH Jin-Hyek (KOR) I’m so happy because I did a better job than I had expected. It has been 10 years for me to finally become world champion! I would like to thank all the people who have believed in me and encouraged me for the last 10 years.
IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) How did you feel when you had only three arrows left? I was worried before shooting the last three arrows, because we were losing by one point! I was not so happy with my game so far, but Chang-Hwan and Jin-Hyek led the team well. I must thank them. I kind of bet it all on the last arrow. It went smoothly, so I am happy. At the end, a 9 would have been sufficient, but I am happy that I shot a 10 to finish on a high note!
Are you ready for tomorrow? I hope I can do a great job tomorrow, too. I’ve got the gold medal in 2007, but I failed to get it in 2003 (redaction note: IM took silver). Many people are encouraging us here, and I am in good shape. It has been great and comfortable to have matches in my home country, Korea.
LEE Chang-Hwan (KOR) It was like a drama. It was even a harder match than the final at the Olympic Games. The French team did a good job too. But I am happier because I think we did better. It was the last final of the day, so I was kind of worried with thoughts like “what if I mess up, while the other team members do a great job?” But, I’m so happy to win and I really hope that our team members will got all the medals in recurve individual matches, tomorrow.
Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) We never gave up. Since there was more pressure, we actually did so more mistakes than yesterday. At the same time, we also shot a lot of 10s (11 out of 24), because we really wanted them. We gave it all. I am happy with silver, but the performance actually deserved gold.
Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA) This match was very emotional, but at the same time I have never felt so relaxed on a final field. We were really close to the Koreans. We just lack a bit of experience. We also need to train as professionally as they do. When we will be able to this, we will match them.
Thomas AUBERT (FRA) We came up short, but not by much. Maybe with a little stress I could have avoided a couple of mistakes. At the end, we shot more than 220 points in all our matches, and it has been long time that somebody challenged the Koreans like that.
Recurve WomenJOO Hyjun-Jung (KOR) We have prepared very hard for this world archery championships, so I’m happy to be a winner! I tried to focus on shooting at every moment. Lastly, I thank the other archers for having done a great job. Also, I should stay focus for tomorrow’s individual match. I will do my best.
YUN OK-Hee (KOR) Actually, I didn’t do a good job in recurve women’s individual match the other day, but now I’m happy to win today in recurve women’s team. I thank all of my team members. I will support them tomorrow and my next objective is next year’s Asian Games.
KWAK Ye-Ji (KOR) You are the youngest in your team, how was your feeling about the gold medal? I’m so pleased, so happy! It’s so nice to win gold at home at the world championships. Somehow I feel a little sad, because it’s only one day left at these world archery championship, but I will do my my best tomorrow as I did today.
Natalya ERDYNIYEVA (RUS) How many medals have you won at world championships now, at such a young age? I must have won one silver and four bronze combined from all the world championships I have participated in. This one is quite a satisfaction because we are a young team and I hope we can keep shooting together for a long time.
Compound MenBraden GELLENTHIEN (USA) – Outdoor Team World Champion in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 The last one is always the best! It is fresh in our memory right now! Moreover, we have been shooting a lot the three of us and we have had amazing scores the whole week long!
Dave COUSINS (USA) - Outdoor Team World Champion in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2009 My first world championship and title were in 1999. So the 10 years anniversary was a bit in my mind during the week. It is just great to shoot with two true professional like Braden and Reo. We have shot so many world championships together and we just know what will happen when it comes to team round.
Reo WILDE (USA) - Outdoor Team World Champion in 2003, 2007, 2009 It was a special feeling to win the 2003 World Championships with my father in the team, but this one feels pretty good, too. I was good to be on the final field before the individual finals tomorrow. I will carry on some information about the wind.
Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) It’s even bigger than the World Cup! This is my sixth world championships and I have been waiting a lot of years to get on the podium. It feels even better because this has been a team effort. It’s not only about me.
Rigoberto HERNANDEZ (ESA) Shooting on such a field, you feel more expectations from the public. There was more crowd, more camera than I when I shot for bronze in the Santo Domingo World Cup (DOM). This is really important, because this is the world medal for El Salvador!
Roberto HERNANDEZ (ESA) Very Happy! I must feel lucky: this is my first world championships and I won a medal!
Compound WomenAlbina LOGINOVA (RUS) It is great to win the team gold after the individual silver in 2007. I am especially happy for my young teammates! I am used to TV, photographer and a large crowd from the world cup, but for them it was maybe the second time only. Korea gave us a chance when they did not have time to shoot the last arrow of the third end, but we followed through with a lot of 10s! It is great because it is the first medal for a compound team for Russia. The second one is coming with the men by the way. I will also try to get another individual medal tomorrow.
Team Korea Do you regret today’s result? It’s too bad we had that incident with the line and missed an arrow because we lost so much time. We think it is because we have little experience. We are going to do train event harder, so we will never lose a match like this again.
Could you explain what was the problem? I should have set the arrow on the bow after passing the shooting line, but I misunderstood because I was too nervous at that time. Therefore our last shooter in this end did not have time to shoot her arrows on the target. She tried to shoot quick but she missed.
It is the first medal in compound. What do you think about it? I hope that compound will develop in Korea taking in account this first medal in international competition. Also, we hope to get another medal at the next world championships
What changes would you like for the future? Compound must be given more importance, more life in Korea. In the past, we have had difficulties in training. However it was a great experience to be part of the national team for these world championships and we hope to continue this way.
Kendal NICELY (USA) How many medals have you won at world championships now, at such a young age? This my second team bronze medal at the elite level and I have won a few gold medals in the youth world championships. I hope I keep shooting until I win a gold at the elite level, too. I still have a lot of shooting ahead of me. I will now go back to the university and balance the studies and the archery. Although I did not shoot as well as I would have liked it, I enjoyed the experience on this final field!
