New Asian Champions Crowned in Bali
Lausanne – 24 November 2009
The 16th Asian Archery Championships concluded on 21 November in Bali, Indonesia. Many surprises occurred in this event that featured teams and individuals from 32 countries.
In the Recurve Men division, Korea won the team title, defeating India 222-219. Chinese Taipei easily won the bronze over China. Individually, KOU Cheng-Wei (TPE) won the gold medal. Xing YU (CHN) was 2nd and Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) 3rd. The Korean men, who had dominated the qualifications, won no medal in this category! Current world champion LEE Chang-Hwan was defeated in the 1/8 elimination round!
The Recurve Women team final featured the gold and silver medallists from the last World Championships. Suprisingly, in Bali Japan took their revenge over the favourite Korea and won the gold medal! China took the bronze. The Koreans did better in the individual competition: JOO Hyun-Jung became the new Asian champion. She beat ZHANG Yun Lu (CHN) in the final. The bronze went to another Korean, KIM Yu Mi.
India and Iran were the best in the Compound Men division. After placing 1st and 2nd in qualifications, the two teams shot against each other in the final. What a tight match! India won 231-230. The bronze medal went to Singapore. In the individual event, India's I.R. SANAM won his second gold medal of the meet ahead of Nyoman PURUHITO (INA) and Gheydi MAJID (IRI).
On the Compound Women's side, after dominating the qualifications, the Korean team won a well-deserved gold medal in the final! India and Iran completed the podium. SEOK Ji-Hyun, who won the Summer Universiade in Belgrade in July, emerged as the new individual Asian champion. Narisara TINBUA (THA) claimed the silver and Manjudha SOY (INA) the bronze. The defending Asian champion from 2007 KWON Oh Hyang (KOR), who had qualified in 1st place, lost in the 1/8 elimination round.
The junior competition featured only recurve individual matches. In the boy's category, Emdadul Haque MILON from Bangladesh won the gold medal. Delfin ADRIANO from the Philippines was 2nd and Recky WILMANSYAH (INA) 3rd. As for the girls, young Iranian archer Yasaman SHIRIAN (IRI) beat two Indonesians, Shaquila Awali FAJRI and Titik Kusuma WARDANI, for the gold.
