Indoor World Archery Challenge – GELLENTHIEN wins!
Lausanne – 22 February 2010
Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) won the first ever Indoor World Archery Challenge in Compound Men. The other winners are Gladys WILLEMS (BEL), in Compound Women, Brady ELLISON (USA) in Recurve Men and Brandi MANTHA (USA) in Recurve Women.
We remind you that the top 8 archers per division from the combined ranking of the two biggest indoor tournaments worldwide – the Tournaments of Nimes and the Tournament of Las Vegas – qualified to shoot the ¼ finals, ½ finals and medal finals of the first Indoor World Archery Challenge on Saturday evening in Vegas.
Compound Men
Second last month in Nimes, Braden GELLENTHIEN (photo) took revenge at the first ever Indoor World Archery Challenge. He defeated Martin DAMSBO (DEN) 119-117 in the final. Dave COUSINS (USA) beat last year’s runner-up in Las Vegas Morgan LUNDIN (SUE) for 3rd place. Former World Champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) placed 5th ahead of the winner of Nimes Jesse BROADWATER (USA), 6th.
Compound Women
The two-time defending champion in Vegas Nichola SIMPSON (GBR) lost in semifinals against Camilla SOEMOD (DEN). The 2009 World Cup runner-up from Denmark advanced to the final but lost the gold to the 2003 World Indoor Champion Gladys WILLEMS (BEL), 113-116.
Recurve Men
Brady ELLISON (USA), who had won the Las Vegas event last year and finished 4th in the European leg, was the strongest on home soil. He qualified to the semifinals along with the winner of Nimes Michelle FRANGILLI (ITA) and two members of the French team that won the silver at the 2009 Worlds, Thomas AUBERT and Jean-Charles VALLADONT. ELLISON eliminated Thomas AUBERT in semifinals in a shoot-off, 115-115 10-9, and then easily defeated Michelle FRANGILLI (ITA) 118-114 for the gold. The two French archers met in the final for bronze, where Jean-Charles VALLADONT won 115-115, 10-9.
Recurve Women
The 3rd from Nimes Marina NAYROLE (FRA) ended up in 3rd at the Indoor World Archery Challenge as well. In the gold medal final, Valentine DE GIULI (SUI) led Brandi MANTHA (USA) halfway through, 58-57, but a bad 8 in the 3rd end cost her the victory. MANTHA won 115-114.
