Jamie Van NATTA clinches first World Ranking Tournament in a shoot-off
Phoenix – 12 April 2010
Archers and para-archers competed in the Arizona Cup on 8-11 April in Phoenix (USA). The winners in the four international categories were all Americans: Brady ELLISON and Jennifer NICHOLS in Recurve, Logan WILDE and Jamie VAN NATTA in Compound. Several world records were broken during the competition.
The archers competing in the World Ranking Tournament experienced the new FITA Rules in effect since 1 April and it did change the way they shot matches.
The Men’s Recurve match was an American only final with Olympian Brady ELLISON dominating his team mate Vic WUNDERLE with a 6-0 win. The shooting conditions had become quite windy and this created challenging conditions. Vetle RISSINGARD of Norway finished 3rd who won against SERRANO from Mexico. In winning the Arizona Cup, Brady ELLISON collected 2500 USD for the fight against breast cancer.
Two-time Olympian Jennifer NICHOLS (USA) won the Recurve Women with a 7-1 win against VALENCIA from Mexico who won a shoot-off against Marie-Pier BEAUDET to get in the final. Marie-Pier finished 3rd.
The Men’s Compound was won by Logan WILDE against Jean PIZARRO from Puerto Rico who was the surprising finalist. Rodger WILLETT was the bronze medallist who defeated HERNANDEZ from El Salvador who had eliminated the number one ranked Dave COUSINS in the 1/8 elimination round with a 4-2 win.
In Compound Women, the gold medal final went to the single arrow shoot-off between the 2008 World Cup Final winner Jamie VAN NATTA (USA, photo) and DE LA CONCHA from Mexico. Both shot a 10 but Jamie’s arrow was just a fraction closer to the centre.
No less than six world records were broken during the competition! On Friday Danielle BROWN (GBR) broke the 72 arrow 70m round in Compound Open Women (para-archery) - 679 points. Danielle BROWN broke on Saturday the record she set a day earlier. The new score is 682 points. There was a Team Compound Open Women record beaten on 10 April: Danielle BROWN, Mel CLARKE and Pippa BRITON (GBR) scored 1988 points in the 2x70m round. Compound Women Team USA (Jamie VAN NATTA - Diane WATSON - Erika ANSCHUTZ) set a new world record in the 3x72 arrow 70 m round at 2049 points. Two more world records were shot in the Mixed Team Round, by Mexico (Ruben OCHOA and Ana CRISANTO) in the Compound Mixed Team with 155 points. The Recurve Mixed Team world record was set by the US team composed by Brady ELLISON and Jennifer NICHOLS with 151 points. The first ever official Mixed Team competition at a world ranking event was won by the US for both team events.
