Quotes of Finals
Sandrine VANDIONANT (FRA)
Recurve Men
Brady ELLISON (USA) - gold
I was 4th last year here. It is a big step forward to win this year. This is my first World Cup win, at the highest level!
The Set System takes some pressure off the archers because you can have a bad arrow and stay in the game. However, you still need to win the 3 or 6-arrow set when it matters. I also appreciated that at the World Cup the sequence of the matches throughout the day was much faster than in the previous events this year.
Recurve Women
Sabrina STRUYF (BEL) - gold
I am happy about the Set System, but I did not expect to win coming to Porec. This changes a bit the perspectives for my season but we will see how it goes.
Bérengère SCHUH (FRA)- bronze
Beating Justyna MOSPINEK is nice, but I would have preferred to beat her in the gold final. Anyway, it is good for the confidence to win such a match. It says that I am on the right path with my technique.
Year after year I am gaining confidence. Last year I was 10th in Porec, this year I won the bronze. This is a good result before the European Championships.
Compound Men
Sam KYRITSOGLOU (BEL) - gold
I am surprised that I won, especially after my qualifications weren’t so great. I did not expect to win a World Cup stage. However, I must say that the last two years I have improved a lot indoor and outdoor. I won the European Grand Prix in Sofia last year. This season I broke twice my personal record at 70m Round raising it at 703 points. Porec is a good place for me! In 2001, I was 2nd at the Junior European Championships here. I remember I screwed up a bit the final. This time I played the final really well. And we have a second final coming for Belgium with Sabrina STRUYF!
Reo WILDE (USA) - bronze
I only shot outdoor for 14 days, this week included. So I am happy with the level that I shot, although there is still some room for improvements. The World Cup is definitely on my hit list this year so we will see each other again.
The Set System implies a different mindset. You need to get used to it, but this is still archery.
Compound Women
Nicky HUNT (GBR) - silver
I was there last year, same place, same time. I won the gold. It was fun to be back on for the final. This probably helped me fight my way through the match and tie it at 5-5 from 1-5. However, I was just a bit short in the shoot-off arrow.
The Set System is OK. Maybe I would add a system of repechage as well. This would give the chance for the better archers to be consistently in the final. I think for the show we want the best in the final.
Sandrine VANDIONANT (FRA) - bronze
I have trained again at a high level for only 7-8 months, so I am still missing some consistency. I still need to work. However today I am very happy with my third place. It brings good emotions to be on stage, in front of a large crew and to shoot at a high level. I did not fear the Set System. I think for me it is an advantage at the moment. However, the game is still the same: you must the arrow in the middle when it matters the most. The Set System can allow for one or two mistakes, but then you need to be able to react, to fight for victory.
Recurve Men Team
Ilario DI BUO (ITA) - gold
I love so much archery that I still want to shoot, even though I am close to 45 year old and have been in archery for 30 years. Of course, it also gives pride to shoot for my country, for my federation, for my family who has always supported me. However, first of all it is for the love of archery. Moreover, I am still looking for the perfect shoot. This season I made some changes in my technique and I still have not assimilated all the changes. I am bit too stiff; I would like more fluidity. I believe we have a kind of a dream team with the return of Michelle FRANGILLI, who is shooting really well, and our Olympic Champion Marco GALIAZZO. My ultimate goal is to go to London 2012, for my 7th Olympic Games. I have been very close to gold twice, I am still hoping for it!
Albina Loginova (RUS)
Recurve Women Team
Viktoriya KOVAL (UKR) - gold
I had to shoot the first arrow of the match and this is always tough. We came from the warm-up field and the rain stopped just before we started the match. Although the wind was not so strong, it was tricky. The shooting conditions were really different. It took us a while to figure we had to set our sight ‘down-left’ and then we shot well. We had to come through a lot of pressure at the end of the match. We had to shoot 29 to tie the score and then we shot another 29 in the shoot-off to win it! It is a national holiday in Ukraine. It is very important for our coach. It is important for all of us. That final was actually the only medal chance for Ukraine today, so, for all these reasons, we are very happy that we won the gold!
Compound Men Team
Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) - gold
We fell relieved. It is a long time since we had to play a shoot-off. It is good to show that we can still shoot a perfect 30 in the shoot-off. The rain made the match tough. I could not get my sight right. I was either too high or too low. I really tried to focus on the last end, but again I shot a 9 a little high. I moved my sight one last time and then caught two X10s to finish the match (one in the fourth end and one in the shoot-off).
Compound Women Team
Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) - gold
Today the conditions were actually better than last year. We had less wind, despite the rain. I must say I love this place! Shooting over the water, enjoying this scenery, I think all this makes it exciting for us and for TV images. Our team is still very young. Since our title in Ulsan, we replaced a 16-year-old with another 16-year-old. The main trial was at the Russian Championships and then it is also the coaches and athletes who chose the final selection. The team may still change before the European Championships but in any case I am confident that our team will be competitive.
Compound Mixed Team and Compound Women
Ashley WALLACE (CAN) – two gold medals
This is my first time at a World Cup stage, and the whole Canadian team made me feel welcome. They gave me a lot of confidence. After the World Championships last year, my entourage convinced me that I should participate in the World Cup this year. I hope to be successful in many stages and also at the Commonwealth Games. During the mixed team gold medal match, I was not impressed by the special field for finals. I just focused on the target and did what I have been taught to do.
