Finland and Italy offer a thriller in semifinal
Visegrad - 17 July 2010
Today the team event is taking place. The team shot this morning on the Visegrad hill, before going down to the castle for the finals in the late afternoon.
Sunny, some wind that brought the temperature a few degrees back. The top eight teams played today in men, women and junior men. Each team has one barebow, one recurve and one compound shooter. They each shoot one arrow per target. The quarterfinals were played on eight targets, hence 24 arrows and a maximum of 144 points. The semifinals and finals have four targets, 72 points.
Men
The No. 1 seed Italy had a difficult quarterfinal versus Great Britain. At mid-match, FRANGILLI-GIORCELLI-SEIMANDI only led 62-60. They increased a bit their lead after 18 arrows, 90-84. Finally SHALES-KALMARU-REES were beaten 116-107. The No. 3 Germany and the No. 6 France also made a show. They were tied at 65-65 after 15 arrows, then at 76-76 after 18 arrows. ROHRBERG-LAUBE-MEYER pulled out a victory 103-99 against PIGEAUD-THIERRY-DUMON at the end. In the other quarters, Finland beat the USA 117-101 and Sweden prevailed over Austria 121-105.
The first semifinal between Italy and Finland was a masterpiece over the four targets! Italy earned the lead at the half 28-26, before Finland tied it at 41-41. At the last target, 45m for recurve, FRANGILLI shot a 5 under pressure with his last arrow to keep the tie at 56-56. The teams had to go to a shoot-off, each archer shooting another arrow at the last target. Italy shot first, 4-5-5. Finland made 5-5-4. Second shoot-off. Finland played first, 6-5-4. Then Italy shot 4-4 and the last 6 of FRANGILLI was too late. TARHALA-HAAVISTO-AHJOKIVI won the second shoot-off 15-14.
In the second semifinal, Sweden had an early lead 15-14, then 31-30. However, a bad third target dearly cost the Swedes. JANSSON-LUNDIN-OTTOSSON scored only 9 points and trailed Germany 40-42. The Germans did not let anything go in the last target and won 55-54.
Women
