21 August 2010 - “Egypt is proud of me,” says gold medal winner Ibrahim SABRY

“Egypt is proud of me,” says gold medal winner Ibrahim SABRY  Singapore – 21 August 2010    Here are the comments from Egypt's Ibrahim SABRY and The Netherlands' Rick van den OEVER at the press conference after the Junior Men's individual archery competition at Kallang Field on Saturday.   Ibrahim SABRY (EGY) - gold medal On how he feels to win gold for Egypt: I feel really, really proud. I’m proud of myself, my parents are proud of me, Egypt is proud of me - that's all I need.   On winning gold while fasting during Ramadan: I've worked hard. I'm fasting and it still happened. It's from God you know, I just keep on shooting. I'm a little bit thirsty but that's OK.   On how he will celebrate his goal medal: I don't know, I'm just trying to calm down. First I will pray and then I don't know.   On who believed he could win the gold medal: There was only one – my coach. My coach is everything because without him I cannot shoot, I cannot train, I cannot do anything.   On how he concentrated during the final: I concentrated and I shot. I didn't care if it was a 10 or an eight or a nine. All I cared about was that I finished.   Rick van den OEVER (NED) - silver medal On whether he felt more pressure as the number one-ranked archer: Maybe I felt a little bit more pressure, but it's quite often that the number one archer doesn't win, it's just something you have to deal with.   On Ibrahim SABRY: I hadn't heard of him before the Youth Olympic Games. I've just asked him how long he trains every day, it's much less than me but he shot so well.   On learning from this defeat: My goal was to win a medal and I won silver so now the next goal has to be gold. I've now got a taste for silver and I want gold.   On his bright orange boxer shorts: I'm really superstitious and I have lots of rituals like I always do a double knot on my left shoe and one on my right. After the ranking round (where he finished first) I went to have a shower and I noticed I had orange boxer shorts on so I thought I would wear them again during the competition. But they weren't the same ones every day.   On his experience at the Youth Olympic Games: It was a great adventure and it will help me in the future. My aim is London 2012 and when I go there I will know lots of things, what it's like in the Olympic Village, that the media are around, that everybody wants your picture. There will be no surprises for me in 2012.   YONS ap/rwb/gs Edited by World Archery Communication
