Juniors have their way in Medellin World Ranking event
Medellin (COL) – 6 December 2010
The City of Medellin World Ranking Event in Colombia will be long remembered not just for the wonderful hospitality and organisation, but mainly for the two junior world records set during the FITA Round in the compound men's category ahead of some top level archers.
Reigning junior world champion Cody THOMPSON (USA) shattered the Junior FITA Round world record with a wonderful score of 1406 points, resulting from the addition of 342, 353, 351 and 360 scores, respectively at 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres. He broke the previous world record by four points.
THOMPSON, together with teammates Josh BYERLY and Levi CYR, also broke the team FITA Round junior world record with a score of 4151 points, 36 more than the existing record held by a Danish team. USA Archery mainly sent its junior team to the World Ranking Event in Medellin so that they get experience. They for sure are making the most of it!
Several archery celebrities were among the top archers in each of the contested categories. THOMPSON showed no respect for former World Cup Final's winner Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), who ranked second with 1399. Venezuela's Nelson TORRES came third with 1387.
The recurve men's list was topped by three Frenchmen: Romain GIROUILLE (1315), Jean Charles VALLADONT (1311) and the Barcelona 1992 Olympic champion Sebastien FLUTE (1277).
Another French archer, former indoor world champion Berengere SCHUH won the recurve women's FITA Round with 1330 points, ahead of USA's Miranda LEEK (1313) and the local competitor Ana Maria RENDON (1310). The world championships bronze medallist Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) shot a low 1278 to rank 7th, behind Larissa PAGAN (CUB) 1295, Sigrid ROMERO (COL) 1291 and Iria GRANDAL (ESP) 1283.
The best compound women's archers were Isabel SERNA (COL) with 1363 points, Natalia LONDONO (COL) with 1349 and Elizabeth SWEET (USA) with 1345.
Eleven countries and 107 archers have been taking part in this competition, which is the last World Ranking Event for 2010. The individual and team matches will take place until 8 December.
