M'Arco, the official mascot of Turin 2011
Turin (ITA) – 27 April 2011
The Organising Committee of the 2011 World Archery Championships and World Archery Para Championships has launched the official mascot for the competition. It represents a deer, symbol of the Hunting Royal Palace of Stupinigi in Turin, and it is called M'Arco, a very common name in Italy.
The design
The new mascot is a nice and funny archer deer with the Italian colours on his tummy.
The deer is the symbol of the Hunting Royal Palace of Stupinigi that will host the qualification and elimination rounds of the World Championships and the whole Para Championships. It is indeed possible to see from kilometres on top of the palace the iron deer (photo below) realised in 1766 by the Italian sculptor Francesco LADATTE.
The name
Marco is one of the most used names in Italy. Of Roman origin, everyone knows Marco Tullio CICERO or Marco Antonio, Marco Aurelio and Marco Polo. Marco is a name that was used in all Italian history and is very common today.
A lot of sport champions are named Marco, as for example the Italian archer and 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALIAZZO, the biker Marco SIMONCELLI and the football player Marco TARDELLI.
Arco is also the Italian word for the "bow", so M'Arco also means "Il mio Arco", in English "my bow".
