Italy in Compound Mixed Team Final Turin – 6 July 2011   Italy will meet Netherlands in the Compound Mixed gold medal match on Saturday. The upraising team of Mexico will meet Korea on the recurve side on Sunday.   The mixed teams played their matches until the semifinals on Thursday afternoon.   Recurve Mixed TeamIn the first elimination round three teams were upset by lower ranked nations. The No. 4 pair from the host country Italy (NESPOLI/VALEEVA) suffered defeat against No. 13 from Poland (PROC/MOSPINEK). Tied after the first end (36-36), Italy took the lead after the first half (74-72). Their opponent tied the score at 109 each with only one end to go. Whereas the Italians ended with 10-9-9-9, their opponents from Poland scores 10-10-9-9 to clinch victory by one point (147-146). After the No. 4 team, the No. 3 mixed double made up of ELLISON/LEEK (USA) was upset 145-147 by the No. 14 pair, KOZHIN/ERDYNIYEVA (RUS). Then, also the No. 6 from China CHEN/FANG was shortly defeated 148-149 by Mexico (No. 11).   After a victory over the No. 4 double in the previous round, Poland faced the No. 5 India (TALUKDAR/KUMARI) in quarterfinal for another upset 150-148. The second seeded team KUO/LE (TPE) was given a hard time by GODFREY/OLIVER (GBR/7) in this round. After a tie 36-36 in the first end, Team GB took a 1-point lead (73-72) at the half-way mark. Their advantage doubled with four arrows to go (111-109). As the British pair opened with a 7 and Chinese Taipei with a 9, the match was tied. The tie remained before the last arrow (10-9 each). The Europeans finally clinched short victory with a 9 for them against an 8 for their contenders (146-145). The other mixed teams going to the semifinals were Korea (1), Poland (13), and Mexico (11).   In the first semifinal the difference between the No. 1 and No. 13 seeded teams became obvious. While Korea started with 10-10-9-10, Poland shot 10-8-9-9 and trailed by three (36-39). The European pair came back a bit at the half-way mark (73-75), and the 1-point gap remained with only the last end to go (112-113). But with two 10s and two 9s to finish the match, the Koreans clinched victory 151-147. In the second semifinal between Mexico and Great Britain, there was a tie after the first (34-34) and second ends (71-71). The South American pair SERRANO/ROMAN took advantage of an 8 by their contenders in the third end to take a 2-point lead (108-106) with only four arrows to go. The Mexicans then shot 8-10-10-9 to win the match 145-140 (8-9-9-8). They will shoot for the first ever recurve mixed team gold against Korea. Bronze will be decided between Poland and Great Britain on Sunday.   Compound Mixed TeamIn the first round (1/8 elimination) the American pair WILDE/VAN NATTA, No. 1 seed and the favourites in this division, had a slow start and trailed by one point after the first end, 38-39, against Belgium, composed of KYRITSOGLOU/PRIEELS. USA managed to tie at 77-77 at the half-way mark. The two pairs remained close, but Team USA took the lead at 115-114. In the last end the Belgian pair scored X10-10-10-9, versus X10-9-10-9 for Team USA, to tie the match at 153-153. In the shoot-off (one arrow per archer) VAN NATTA scored an X10 just inside, while KYRITSOGLOU shot a close to the the X10 line but outside. Both WILDE and PRIEELS had an X10. The match was still tied, so the winning team was decided by the arrow closest to the centre: it was the PRIEELS' arrow for an unexpected victory for Belgium! Two other pairs were upset by lower ranked teams: RINCHINO/LOGINOVA (RUS/6) lost to GENET/CHESSE (FRA/14), 152-153, while DAMSBO/SOEMOD (DEN/8) was defeated by PAGNI/TONIOLI (ITA/9), 150-154.   After upsetting the No. 1 pair in the first round, Belgium could not do anything against the host pair PAGNI/TONIOLI who set a new world record with 158 points. Mexico with ALVARADO/OCHOA (4) led against Korea made up of CHOI/SEOK (5) after the first end (40-37). They keep the lead after two ends (78-76). However the Koreans scored almost perfectly (X10-10-9-10) in the third end to take the lead (115-114). The Asian double even did better (10-10-X10-10) in the last part to clinched victory 155-151. They will face Italy in semifinal, while Iran (153-150 v France) will shoot against the Netherlands (153-152 v Canada).   In their semifinal against the Koreans CHOI/SEOK, the Italians PAGNI/TONIOLI took a 1-point lead after one end (39-38) and kept their short advantage throughout the second (76-75) and third ends (114-113). Though the Korean pair tried hard to get back with their last four arrows (10-X10-9-X10), they could only bow to the perfect end their opponents achieved (X10-10-10-10). Final score: 154-152! The host country will shoot in the gold final on Saturday!
