Flash Quotes from the Individual Eliminations
Turin – 7 July 2011
Archers shot the individual elimination matches today at the World Championships. Here are their reactions.
Recurve Men
Marco GALIAZZO (ITA)
The beginning of this match was difficult, because of the change of field due to the TV live webcast and I took some time to adjust my sight. I gave everything I had to give, showing that my Olympic gold medal at Athens was not a matter of luck. I also had the opportunity to show my skills in front of my fans.
Magnus PETERSSON (SWE)
It was a tough match and I was focusing on performing my best and on getting the highest number of 10s as possible. I know shooting only in the 10-ring is really hard [he smiles], otherwise I should have been shooting only 10s.
Joe FANCHIN (USA)
I shot pretty well, I made a lot of good shots. I had some problems with left and right because of the wind, but my consistency was okay. I am confident for the future matches.
Rahul BANERJEE (IND)
For the second time in four yers India has missed an Olympic qualification, whereas the team was among the favourites. It did not go better for you in individual today. How can you explain it?
I lost the match. But I was shooting really good. We had very close scores: I shot 29-27-28-27-28 and KIKUCHI shot 28-29-28-28-28. In the end we finished the match with 6 to 4. The only regret is a I shot an 8 in the last set and lost the match. I can not complain about the weather or the field. It is nice, the organisation is good. But I just lost the match.
Recurve Women
Justyna MOSPINEK (POL)
Yesterday we had the team competition versus Ukraine and we lost the shoot-off. I was not thinking about taking my “revenge” on Lidia SICHENIKOVA, but it was very hard to beat her because she was shooting a lot of golds. During the shoot-off I was thinking about shooting a 10 but soon came a 9. Fortunately she shot a 9 too, and mine was closer to the centre. For tomorrow I want only to go straight to the finals.
Lidia SICHENIKOVA (UKR)
It has been a very hard match, even harder due to the final shoot-off. Justyna MOSPINEK is a very strong archer, it is really difficult to beat her.
Natalia NASARIDZE, TUR
Natalia you returned at high level archery after a long break. Why did you return and what are you plans for the near future?
I had a two-year break. I really needed to take a rest from archery and I also had to solve some problems. But after two years I felt that I really miss archery and decided to return. Archery is a very good kind of sport. You can shoot your whole life. The competition venue in Stupinigi palace is so beautiful. How I have refused to shoot in such a beautiful place (smiling)!
I came back to training no so long ago. I am planning to continue shooting when I go back home. I did not shoot enough to prepare for the World Championship. But from now we are planning to start a serious training program. We need to win the quotas for the Olympic Games and we will do our best.
Natalya ERDYNIEVA, RUS
Natalya, you were at the top of your game so early in your life in the 2007 World Championship. Since that time, you have been close to the top, but never quite made it on top. What has been missing over the last four years?
A lot of things have changed. I shoot in a different way, I changed the bow several times, my training program also changed. I know I am not at the best form now. But I will work on it. My coaches and I will work hard on it. Today I lost the match in 1/24 eliminations on the scores of 2 to 6. My third and second ends were bad. However, yesterday we won the team quota for the Olympic Games. My goal is to continue my training to gain the perfect form for the Olympics.
Aida ROMAN (MEX)
The competition was crazy, but the last match was the craziest. We had rain, then the rain stopped and came the wind. Then rain again, then wind. It has been difficult. But I’m very happy because I won the shoot-off, my arrow was closer to the centre than my opponent’s.
Compound Men
Gabriel BADENHORST (RSA)
I know that Pietro GRECO shoots very fast, so – during the shoot-off – I waited because I knew I had enough time. I saw him scoring a 9 and I finished with a 10. I am really happy! I had the same experience in Antalya when I had a shoot-off: my opponent had shot a perfect X, I saw it and, as a result, shot a 9. So this time I had decided to wait, and it ended up well.
Herian BOCCALI (ITA)
Today is my birthday and winning the match against Patrizio HOFER is a good birthday present. I would like to have more gifts like this one, advancing as much as possible in the brackets.
Alexandr DAMBAEV, RUS
My shooting was really good today. I managed to apply everything that was taught by our coaches during the preparation for Turin. My results are good and I feel really comfortable. This is my first event on such a high level. I am absolutely delighted with everything. It is a great experience and I think my participation here will contribute to raise the level of my results. My world ranking position has increased from 200th in 2010 to 22nd place in 2011. Everything in archery is very interesting for me. I hope tomorrow we will have a nice day and the luck will be on my side.
Simon ROUSSEAU, CAN
This is my second competition at such a high level. The first one was the 2009 World Cup stage 2 in Antalya (TUR). This Championship is a very big event. Everything seems to be organised very well, the field is beautiful.
My elimination matches were tough. I lost at 1/24 and I do not like this result. For now I can only train more to prepare better. This is archery.
In two days our team will shoot for bronze. My team and I, we are ready for this match. We have very good archers in our team and we feel pretty comfortable about our result.
Compound Women
Fatima AGUDO (ESP)
The Championships in Turin are very well organised. I like everything: the beautiful elimination venue and the opening ceremony. The Championships in Ulsan were good. And Turin is really good also. Unfortunately I am not in the competition anymore. I did not shoot well and I’m not satisfied with my results (she starts to cry...).
Nataliya BURDEYNA, UKR
You are the newcomer in the compound bow. What are you feeling about these Championships?
I am not the newcomer in archery in general. I was a recurve archer for many years. I am the 2005 Indoor World Champion and I have won the Olympic silver medal with my team in Sydney 2000. But it is my third competition of such a high level with a compound bow. I started compound about 3 years ago and I still assimilate the experience. I do not shoot as much as I wish. Of course I would like to shoot more, but we have some problems with the shooting venue at home.
My qualification result is not high due to a problem with the bow, but we solved it by the time of the elimination. It is a big event. Many archers know each other for many years. My first opponent was Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS). It was a difficult match. The result was close up to the last shot. Our results were one of the highest compared to the other results in the 1/48 women elimination. For compound archers these Championships are the top event, like the Olympic Games for the recurve archers.
Why did you change for compound?
If you are a member of the national team as a recurve you must stay at the training camp almost all year long. It became difficult for me. Some years ago I got the feeling that I really wanted to change something in my life. But after being an archer for the half of my life, I could not go that far from this sport. So I chose the Compound.
Jorina COETZEE (RSA)
We are at the 1\24 individual qualification. Still need to be up on the game. The elimination field is very well laid out. Except the appeals from Tuesday's team events everything runs according to the schedule. We all came back here to meet again after Ulsan. The compound women are shooting really good. We can see a lot of strong archers.
Andrea GALES (GBR)
Tomorrow I will face Jamie VAN NATTA from the USA in the 1/16 elimination round. Today I was shooting well and I am very confident for tomorrow’s match: at this level it is only a matter of a couple of points so we will see who will have the chance to go ahead. I am looking forward to the finals.
Laura LONGO (ITA)
At the beginning of this match, in my first end the arrow group was very large. Now I feel only sadness, I was expecting more from this elimination round. I did my best, I really put all my strength and my will into this match. However this was not enough! I have wasted a week, I have been sick and so I have not practised as much as I would have liked to. My competition is over, but I hope to see one of the Italian archers in a final.
Maja MARCEN (COL)
I am feeling fine and I did not lose this match. My opponent was shooting some arrows in the eight ring, while my arrows were staying in the gold.
I like the idea of a match displayed on a big screen and broadcast live on the internet. Anyway I was feeling the pressure to be on TV because I knew that there had been more than 4000 viewers overall yesterday.
Gladys WILLEMS, BEL
After the 1/24 of the women elimination round we asked the World Record Holder about her match:
This match for me was not so good. Just one arrow decided the final result. I shot a 5. My release did not work at the shot and it was bad luck. I liked the competition a lot. We shoot in good weather in a very nice place but to be the winner you need luck. Especially it is a big challenge at the 50m match. During the whole match after each end the results are very close! Everyone wants to win and even with a very good technique and the best equipment you also need luck. This is archery!
