5 February 2012 - Quotes of the Official Practice

Quotes of the Official Practice Las Vegas (USA) – 5 February 2012   The World Archery Indoor Championships started this morning in Las Vegas with the official practice of the recurve archers, followed by the compound archers in the afternoon. On the sidelines, we asked the archers the following questions.

1. How does it feel to be in Las Vegas?
2. How did you prepare for this event? How do the recurve archers combine preparation for the indoor season and the outdoor season that will culminate with the London Olympic Games?
3. Who do you root for in today’s Super Bowl?

Recurve

Viktor RUBAN (UKR) 1. Las Vegas seems interesting, I have just arrived last night and it’s my first time here. Hopefully we’re going to explore the city tonight.
2. I have had a good preparation for the indoor season, but I’m training mostly outdoors, because the Olympic Games are the most important.
3. I didn’t know about the Super Bowl. I might watch it on TV.

Jennifer NICHOLS (USA) 1. It’s really nice to be able to shoot the Indoor World Championships in my home country. My fiancé’s father is coming to watch me compete for the first time.
2. I’ve kind of trained both indoors and outdoors, I went back and forth, starting with a little bit of indoors, then outdoors.
3. I’m not a Super Bowl fan. The only football that I watch is Texas A&M—that’s my University team. We are the Texas Aggies.

Alejandra VALENCIA (MEX) 1. It’s my first time in Las Vegas, it’s warm and welcoming. I’m feeling good here, I like the place.
2. I have trained more for indoor archery which is technically a little bit different from outdoor. At the same time, I have trained towards an Olympic Games qualification which is a big motivating factor.
3. I don’t know the rules of American football but I’m going to watch the game for the excitement of the competition.

Miranda LEEK (USA)
1. I’m very excited to shoot this competition. It’s been a long time since I last shot in Vegas—the last time was the Vegas Tournament in the cub category with my compound bow, I must have been 8 or 10 years old! It’ll be great to come back again, it’s going to be fun.
2. I just shot indoors at my local range where I usually shoot. I shoot with big indoor arrows.
3. The commercials! (she laughs). I don’t follow football, I’m terrible.

Gregory KREJ (FRA)
1. It’s the second time that I shoot here and I’m feeling pretty good. There is a little bit of pressure—just the right amount. Vegas is a crazy city in terms of atmosphere—it’s really different from anything else.
2. I did a lot of technical practice at the beginning of the season. Then I started training for the indoor archery season in November. The French selection system required us to shoot a quota between end of November and mid-December. Then a final qualifying event took place in Rennes for the archers who had previously reached the quota, they had to repeat that score again in order to qualify for the Indoor World Championships.
3. I don’t really follow the Super Bowl. I am going to watch the final, maybe not all the way to the end, because the recurve qualifications are taking place tomorrow morning and I need to get a good rest.

Hugh MACDONALD (CAN)
1. Very good, it’s pretty much a straight shot down from Vancouver, there’s no jet lag so it’s great.
2. I haven’t shot a lot of indoors. I took some time off in the fall to let my shoulder injury heal. I didn’t expect that I would qualify for the Canadian world team and I’m really happy I did.
3. I may watch some of it, probably not all of it. I don’t even know who is playing. We are here for other reasons (laughs).

Brady ELLISON (USA)
1. I feel OK. I don’t feel great, but I don’t feel bad yet. Hopegully tomorrow I’ll feel a little bit better than I feel today.
2. I haven’t practiced indoors at all, besides the US World Team trials and the Tournament of Nimes, I’ve just been shooting outdoors because the outdoor season is the most important this year.
3. I root for the Patriots. I just hope that Tom BRADY dominates.

Compound

Albina LOGINOVA (RUS)
1. I am very happy to be in Vegas again. I think it’s a very good idea to hold the World Championships here just before the World Archery Festival. Las Vegas is a very interesting place and there are many people who come here, not just for the archery competition but for all that Vegas has to offer.
2. We have had training camps to prepare for this competition. I can’t say that I like indoor archery, I prefer outdoor, but this is one step towards the next outdoor season. I didn’t have a good start to the indoor season, but now my results are getting better and better. I hope to perform better here than in Nîmes or Belgium. After the World Championships I am going to compete in the Vegas Tournament.
3. I just arrived last night and I will probably go to sleep rather than watch the game.

Reo WILDE (USA)
1. I’m feeling good, I’m excited. It’s nice to have the World Indoors in the United States. My father and little brother will be here on Wednesday.
2. I had a lot of practice and had good indoor tournaments—the US World Team trials, the Nimes Tournament, the Lancaster Archery Classic. I had good results and lots of hard work. It’s been a fun season so far.
3. I won’t miss the Super Bowl final! It’s sad because we usually watch it at home and have a big party and I’m going to miss it. My little brother is a big Giants fan, so I’ll root for the Giants.

Christopher PERKINS (CAN)
1. It’s a different experience. It’s the first time I’ve been in Vegas, my first Indoor Worlds. Overall so far my shooting is going well. New target faces are a litle bit different to aim at. We’ll see what happens.
2. At this time of the year for us Canadians it’s mostly indoors right now, local shoots to prepare for this. Theres a new target face so this is kind of learning on the new target face. Basically to train for this is just keep shoot. We got local shoots that are mainly indoors now because of our weather. I shoot to have fun and we’ll see what happens. Whatever the results are at the end of the day, that’s what they are.
3. I watch a little bit football. I’ll probably watch it, my sister’s boyfriend cheers for the Giants so that’s probably who I’m going to end up cheering for.

Marcella TONIOLI (ITA)
1. It’s my first time in Vegas. The hotel is very beautiful. I like shooting indoors as well as outdoors, it’s the same for me.

Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA)
1. It feels really great, this is my first World Championships in the US. It’s a very different experience and I like it. My fiancé will come to watch me compete on Thursday.
2. I’ve never shot this target before, today is the first time I see it. It’s not much different than shooting outdoors, it’s not giving me any problems. It’s just a different mind game, because whenever you miss, it feels like you missed bigger.
3. I like football in general and am definitely going to watch the game, pulling for the Giants.

Danielle BROWN (GBR)
