Second shot at gold for Colombia!

In recurve men, Ukraine (No 8) impressively scored 226 in the first round to defeat the Olympic team champion Italy, with Michele FRANGILLI, Mauro NESPOLI and new team member Alberto ZAGAMI. Korea (No 1) posted the same score of 226 to defeat Belarus. Both teams then met in a quarter-final full of promises. Ukraine took the lead from the very first end, and held it until the final three arrows. However, final scores of 8-7-6 handed the victory to IM Dong Hyun, LEE Seungyun and OH Jin Hyek (219-218).
Turkey (No 13), who upset France (No 4) in the first round, defeated Spain (No 12) in quarter-final. China (No 2), after a difficult first round that ended-up in shoot-off with Russia, defeated Mexico easily in the quarterfinal. Finally, the USA (No 3) led 58-55 in their quarter-final against Japan (No 6), but many 8s on the American side allowed Japan to come back and win the match 222-220.
Korea took an early lead over Turkey in the first semi-final, and despite extremely good shooting, the athletes of the host country were defeated 222-224. Japan, led by Olympic silver medallist Takaharu FURUKAWA, trailed after the first half but capitalised on a bad second half by China (105 points) to win the other semi-final. They will challenge Korea in the gold medal match, while Turkey will have a shot at bronze against China.
In recurve women, Korea (No 1) had an easy victory over Georgia in the first round, and posted the highest score of this category against India in their quarter-final (victory 227-224). CHANG Hye Jin, KI Bo Bae and YUN Ok Hee had a harder semi-final match against Russia. They were tied with Tatiana SEGINA, Inna STEPANOVA and Kristina TIMOFEEVA after the first half (111-111), but gained three points over the second half to advance to the final.
On the other side of the bracket, Japan (No 15) upset China (No 2) in the first round (222-214). Olympic team bronze medallist Kaori KAWANAKA, shooting with Yuki HAYASHI and Ayano KATO, then scored 213 in the quarter-final, which was enough to beat Italy. In the semi-inal they faced Ukraine (No 3), who had had relatively easy early rounds against Iran and Germany. Japan led from the start and won 218-212. They will face Korea for the gold, while neighbours Russia and Ukraine will battle it out for the bronze.
In the compound men’s category, the teams from the USA (No 1) and Denmark (No 2) showed their ambitions from the very first round, where both posted 237 points to advance to the quarter-finals. The USA repeated the same score one more time; meanwhile, Denmark suffered from an 8 and a few 9s in their quarterfinal against Australia, but recovered to win the match 233-230. France (No 5), winner versus the Netherlands (No 4), and Italy (No 11), upset Korea (No 3) with the help of too many 9s from that team, and also advanced to the semi-finals.
The USA, with their three athletes Braden GELLENTHIEN, Reo WILDE and Rodger WILLETT Jr. in the top 5 of the world ranking, had their hardest match of the day against France. They trailed after two ends but France then had trouble finding the 10, allowing the United States to win 231-228. Denmark, with individual medal finalists Martin DAMSBO and Patrick LAURSEN, as well as Stephan HANSEN, had an easier semi-final. They defeated the Italian team (No 11) 234-227.
The first round of compound women’s matches saw Venezuela (No 12) upset India (No 5), while all the other favourites qualified. In the quarter-finals, Colombia (No 8) challenged Korea (No 1) in what was the most interesting showdown of this round. Each team had an individual finalist, SEOK Ji Hyun and Sara LOPEZ. Korea led halfway through (111-110), but Colombia came back and took the lead in the third end, and never let it go. Final victory 227-225 for Colombia. In the semi-final, they met Russia (No 4), who had had easy matches until then, over Great Britain and Venezuela. Colombia shot superbly in their first semi-final, leaving no chance to Russia (233-225).
On the other side of the bracket, European champion France (No 3) defeated Italy (No 6) by two points in quarter-finals, while Mexico and the USA battled it out in a tight match that turned in favour of the USA over the second half. In the semifinal, France had six 8s while the USA had none, for an American victory 227-221. The gold medal match will be a battle between the USA and Colombia, giving Sara LOPEZ a second shot at a gold medal; France and Russia will meet in the bronze medal match tomorrow on the beach of Antalya.
