Buenos Aires will host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games

During the IOC Extraordinary Session held in Lausanne today, Buenos Aires was announced as the winning nation to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. Buenos Aires, Glasgow and Medellin had 15 minutes to present their final bids to the IOC Members. After the first round of voting was completed by the IOC Members, Glasgow was eliminated (13 votes), leaving the Argentinian capital (40 votes) and the Colombian department capital of Antioquia (32 votes) facing each other in the second and final round.
At 15:40 hours CET, Jacques Rogge, IOC President, announced the city of Buenos Aires as host city for the 3rd Youth Olympic Games. Buenos Aires obtained 49 votes compared to the 39 votes of Medellin.
This victory represents a sweet revenge, as previous bids to host the Olympic Games had been unsuccessful for Buenos Aires on five occasions. “Argentina and the city of Buenos Aires were ecstatic. We had already applied to host the Games in the past and this time we got the IOC's unconditional vote of support for bringing the Youth Olympic Games home. It is a great experience for our youth in which they will have the chance to share the values of Olympism, sport, culture and education”, declared Mario MOCCIA, Secretary General of the Argentinian Olympic Committee.
Refereeing to the adverse surveys of the last days made to Buenos Aires, Mr MOCCIA commented: “I was very nervous because it’s extremely complicate to predict what will be the voting trend and when I saw the surveys I wondered where such surveys could come from. We knew that we had a lot of possibilities, as the bid of Medellin, and Glasgow had some weaknesses in our opinion but until the last moment I didn’t know how the votes would be directed, even after the first voting round. At the end, I’m very happy that surveys went wrong”, continued Mr MOCCIA. “Argentinians and fundamentally the city of Buenos Aires will assume these Games organisation with responsibility and we thank the IOC for this legacy”, concluded Mr MOCCIA.
With an approved budget of 69 million US$, Buenos Aires took the decision to renovate the whole sports facilities proposed for the YOG. Archery will be one of the two sports to have completely new infrastructures.
After Singapore hosted a very successful Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and Nanjing will have their turn next year, all that is left to say is see you in Buenos Aires in 2018.
