ELLISON and XU top recurve qualifications in Medellin

Recurve athletes battled it out in qualifications at four distances today in the city of eternal spring. The men shot 36 arrows per distance at 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres, while the women shot at 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres. 
Former world N°1 Brady ELLISON made his return to the top by placing first of the men’s qualifications. The American archer, who was eliminated prematurely in Shanghai and Antalya, was 5th after the first distance (320), climbed to 2nd place after the second distance (334), shot 333 at 50 metres and outscored everybody else at 30 metres (358) to emerge on top of the men’s ranking (1345 points). He was one of only two men who didn’t score any arrow below 7. Mexico’s Juan René SERRANO (main photo) was steady at every distance to finish 2nd with 1341 points. Olympic team champion Mauro NESPOLI (ITA), who scored the highest total at 90 metres (325), suffered from some difficult shots at 70 and 50 metres and dropped in the ranking, but climbed back to 3rd place in the end. He was followed by Asian champion Khairul Anuar MOHAMAD (MAS) and India’s Atanu DAS. In 6th was another Malaysian archer, Atiq Bazil BAKRI. Competing in his first World Cup season, BAKRI, who will turn 19 next month, was the top scorer at 70 metres. World Cup Final bronze medallist Gaël PREVOST (FRA) and Olympic bronze medallist DAI Xiaoxiang (CHN) completed the top 8. 
As a team, the Mexican men distinguished themselves with the highest score of all countries (3959). Malaysia finished second (3956), ahead of France (3953), China (3946) and Olympic silver medallists United States (3941).
The women’s division was dominated by the Chinese women. Olympic team silver medallist in London, XU Jing, scored a total of 1349 points (333 at 70 metres, 331 at 60 metres, 329 at 50 metres and 356 at 30 metres) to finish 1st. She surpassed archery legend Khatuna LORIG (photo) by just one point. Xu’s teammates CUI Yuanyuan, individual winner in Antalya, finished 3rd with 1345 points. Two more Chinese Olympic team silver medallists, CHENG Ming and FANG Yuting, placed 4th and 6th, respectively. Between them was the top Latin American archer, world N°2 and Olympic silver medallist Aida ROMAN, who posted the second best score of the last distance to finish 5th. India’s Deepika KUMARI and Bombayla Devi LAISHRAM grabbed the 7th and 8th spot, respectively. Top Colombian archer Ana Maria RENDON, the 2008 Panamerican champion, was 13th. 
China easily topped the team ranking with 4036 points. India was a distant second (3987) ahead of the United States (3969). Mexico finished 4th (3922) ahead of the host country, 5th with 3877 points. The mixed team from the United States, made of Khatuna LORIG and Brady ELLISON, finished 1st (2693) ahead of China’s XU Jing and DAI Xiaoxiang (2680) and Mexico’s Aida ROMAN and Juan René SERRANO (2679).
