Marcus flies Brazilian flag at Nanjing Youth Olympics opening ceremony

“I had already spoken with my coach during the journey: ‘imagine if I carry the flag of Brazil during the opening,’ I told him,” archer Marcus DALMEIDA said when he was informed of the Brazilian Olympic Committee’s decision.

Barely containing his excitement, Marcus continued: “Carrying the flag of my country at an Olympics is something unique that I will keep for the rest of my life.”

“I’ve never felt this emotion before.”

In his first full international season, DALMEIDA qualified for the Lausanne 2014 World Cup Final in second position in the rankings behind London 2012 finalist Rick VAN DER VEN from the Netherlands.

The young Brazilian recurve archer won three gold medals – individual, team and mixed team – at the South American Games in Santiago de Chile this year, and made the top eight at each the last three Archery World Cup stage in 2014.

His rise to the top has been swift and impressive. Marcus is already Brazil’s best hope for a medal in the Rio 2016 archery competition, and arguably one of the nation’s best shots a medal across all sports.

Recognised by the Brazilian Olympic Committee for his potential in both two years and right now, Marcus is purely concentrated on China. He wants to win gold.

“We’re all in Nanjing to give our best. I am only one among many Brazilian athletes,” he said, displaying a poise and maturity beyond his years.

Head of the Brazilian team at these second Summer Youth Olympics Adriana BEHAR praised Marcus’ attitude. “He is a source of pride in our delegation,” she explained. “His conduct out of competition serves as an example for other athletes.”

Carrying the flag of Brazil is a well-deserved honour for one of the world’s most exciting young archers. Gathering respect for his approach as an athlete, we’re even more excited to see how Marcus performs in competition at Nanjing.

With less that a week to go before qualification, the 2014 Youth Olympic Games have officially begun.
