Alberto Simonelli shortlisted as IPC athlete of month in January 2019

Alberto Simonelli has been nominated for the International Paralympic Committee’s Allianz Athlete of the Month award for January 2019 following his world record-setting performance at the Indoor Archery World Series event in France.

The three-time Paralympian scored 594 out of a possible 600 points for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round at the Nimes Archery Tournament, beating his previous record from February 2018 by four.

Public voting for the award is open on the International Paralympic Committee website until midday on Tuesday 12 February.

The 51-year-old competed at both the para and able-bodied world championships in 2017, and has been a member of Italy’s Hyundai Archery World Cup squad for the past two seasons. He will attempt to qualify for his fourth Paralympics in 2020 after finishing as runner up in the compound open events at Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016.

Nominations for the Allianz Athlete of the Month award are chosen after submissions from National Paralympic Committees and international federations.
