Rebagliati makes shoot-off stand at world ranking event in Slovenia

Chiara Rebagliati shoots at the Veronica’s Cup.

Chiara Rebagliati’s shoot-off nine was enough to see off Madalina Amaistroaie in a choppy recurve women’s final in tough conditions at the Veronica’s Cup in Kamnik, Slovenia.

Shamai Yamrom, Amanda Mlinaric and Artem Ovchynnikov also picked up wins at the world ranking event.

Heavy rain over the past two days of competition added an extra layer of complexity to today’s arena finals. Some struggled more than others – and while Rebagliati wasn’t perfect, she didn’t suffer the same erratic arrows as her Romanian opponent.

“I’m feeling good. It was a close match,” said the 27-year-old Italian. “It’s my first time here. The location is very good and the finals field is wonderful.”

Ovchynnikov beat France’s Romain Fichet with a fourth set of 25 points. Not usually enough on the international stage.

“The weather wasn’t very friendly,” said the Ukrainian.

With Olympic qualifying winding down, recurve archers were out in force at this year’s Veronica’s Cup – more than 170 in total. The British men and Ukraine’s women won top points in the team events but it’s unlikely these will prove crucial with the squads currently ranked 24th and 18th in the world.
