Preview: European Para Cup gets underway as the build-up to Gwangju begins

The first leg of the European Para Archery Cup begins in Rome, Italy, with 154 athletes seeking glory and ranking points in a world championships year.
Many well-known archers and Paralympic medallists are taking part, including Phoebe Paterson Pine, Jodie Grinham, Nathan MacQueen, David Drahoninsky, Piotr Van Montagu, Pooja and Sheetal Devi.
The event also offers competitions for visually impaired archers, featuring both world number ones, Christos Misos and Daniele Piran.
This year’s finals will be held at the iconic Stadio Dei Marmi, famous for its marble statues, which also previously hosted the 2017 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final among other major archery competitions.
The second leg of the European para circuit will take place in Nove Mesto in August, shortly before the World Archery Para Championships in Gwangju, Korea.

What’s the story? The first major outdoor para archery competition of the year, the European Para Archery Cup welcomes athletes from all over the world. With the World Archery Para Championships in Gwangju coming down the line, this field is at full strength, with top squads from most major para archery nations – although a few, notably China, are keeping their powder dry for now.
